Most Disappointing Day in Falcon Basketball History

Post by ZuluWarrior »

March 12, 2000

Selection Sunday with a team that was the class of the MAC, some high profile victories and one bad loss in the MAC Conference Tourney. I was 99% certain that we were in. Almost every 'expert' including Dickie V saying we were still in. ESPN was filming the team for their reaction on getting in. What a disappointing evening that was.

Tomorrow we will watch from the outside looking in. I have faith that Chris Kingston will be diligent in his efforts. I'm excited by his hire of Coach Babers, now let's get our Coach Clawson for the bball program!

I remember that day very well. I believe the team was up in the stadium club at Perry Stadium to watch the announcement. Tough, tough day.

For me it was March 12, 1983 at the MAC Championship game. We won the MAC regular season going 15-3 and had OU coming to Anderson Arena for the final when the tournament was still played on campus sites.

A packed Anderson with a rowdy crowd that wouldn't move to let the OU band have a section in the lower stands. So their band stood in the corner of Anderson the whole game.

We had beaten OU by 17 at their place in January and just two weeks earlier we had beaten them by 12 at our place.

We choke one off and lose 59-56 in the MAC Championship on our home floor.

Probably our best chance to go to the NCAA Tournament since 1968.

This one was more disappointing to me because we had the chance to earn the automatic bid and not leave it up to the committee.

It was so painful to sit in Anderson and watch that game...

I remember the 1983 game.

I also recall Miami hitting at 30 footer at the buzzer to eliminate BG at the Gund.

We keep forgetting that in 2000, we had what I still call the Morgantown Meltdown. We lost by 50 points to a mediocre WVU team. After that, there was no realistic expectation of an at large bid.

I'll agree with Bleed on the 1999-2000 team's loss to WVU. Combine that with Jason Bleeping Grunkemeyer's shot and that team had no chance.

I was more disappointed that the 2001-2002 team got left out. Some solid non conference win and 3 losses against a team that eventually made the Elite 8.

Of course, both teams got beat in the first round of the NIT so neither went out and proved it belonged after the disappointment.

Lots of disappointment on the men's side - games and seasons. What was painful and eye opening to me was the NCAA loss the woman's team suffered at the hands of Florida in Anderson Arena sometime during the 90s. I felt we belonged at the national level and would beat them soundly on our own floor. A poised bigger and physical Gator team took us down in front of a full house. The game clearly evoked the types of players we needed in the future to play at that level. Kate's team remains the standard.

WORST DAY OF MY LIFE! But I remember it a little differently. I was sitting in the lower student section. It seemed to me like they weren't even going to let OU's band into the gym until someone opened up the doors at the north and all 110 of them and their Dr. Smith (Lost In Space) looking director all poured in. I then remember an announcement for us to squeeze together and they put them all in OUR student section at the North end of the gym! Then they proceeded to play LOUDER THAN HELL like always, every time our band played anything. It was disgusting.

I can still see one of the classless OU players sitting on the basket after the game with his ass on the rim like a toilet.

I remember the announcement but the students weren't budging. I was sitting on that same side of the floor at about mid-court. I think some of the OU band got into the stands but not all of them. Many stood in the corner on the floor. I do remember them playing as loud as possible whenever our band started to play. They were trying to get back at the students who wouldn't move. Ultimately, they got the final laugh...scoreboard!

The 1983 loss was bitter because we wer so close, but I gotta go with a couple of others. The worst being the Grunkenmeyer shot from East Jesus that tied the game and sent us into an overtime loss. I had all tournament tickets and rooms and got to sit there and watch the others play in the championship game.

I vaguely remember the Seagate Center (Gosh I HATE Toledo) game where someone (Anthony Stacey?) was getting directions from Coach Larranaga and had a backcourt violation. It was a critical turnover and we lost the game. This would have been in the 2000? timeframe. I think it was the year we went to NIT and Tom Hall was like 0-5 from the free throw line and we lost the game at Wisconsin by 2 or 3 points.

I was there that night. Awful, awful night. Hockey team lost, too. OU had that band...that was the best chance. Home court, best team. That would have been the year.

I remember Demar Moore having a 10-second violation bringing the ball up court late in the game at Seagate.

I was there for the Grunkenmyer shot, but the '83 game was worst because it we had won that we'd gone to the tournament. In 2000, we would have still had to win 2 or 3 more games to get there even if we would have beaten Miami.

BTW...the MAC changed the tournament format the next year so the #1 seed didn't have to play the very first game the first day at Noon. Hell, BG was out that year as #1 seed before the most people got to the tournament. The MAC was determined to not have that happen again.
