If you think our attendance is bad, EMU in a first round post season home game last night had a whopping 373 in attendance.

You know what is even more sad than just 373 people in attendance for EMU's home game? It's 373 more people than BG has had for a postseason tournament home game (NCAA, NIT, CIT, CBI, etc) in its 100-year HISTORY of playing basketball!!! BG has never, ever hosted a postseason game. What's more, it's been 39 years since BG has even won any sort of a postseason tournament game and that was National Commissioner's Invitational in 1975 and that tournament is non-existent. The fact that I am jealous of EMU for one, winning that game, and two, hosting that game, is very sad. Pathetic actually.

And the women's post season game for EMU drew 131 fans. Was it even worth opening the arena for 131 people. Heck, the concession stands could serve microwavable popcorn with those numbers.

I used to think Eastern Michigan would be a good fit in the Missouri Valley, at least for football (and in some other league for hoops; I'm not sure if the Missouri Valley would take them in all sports or not). They could try to get their stuff together playing Youngstown State, Northern Iowa, and the like each fall.

But, honestly, that's Division II type attendance right there. Maybe they really belong in the GLIAC.

A long time ago I seem to remember reading that the MAC presidents were talking about maybe trying to push EMU out the door in the mid 1980s. Then EMU won the MAC in football (for the only time) and that took some of the heat off.

I personally think it would be nice if the presidents rekindled that discussion. It gets old being in a league with these guys.

If the MAC kicked out Eastern Michigan, it would be the biggest case of addition by subtraction that I could ever think of in college sports. EMU is the one conference school that has not been competitive in any revenue sport in the past decade (unless you're willing to call women's basketball a revenue sport in which case they had a flash in the pan run to the MAC title in 2011). If you go back further than that, they've been pathetic in the revenue sports for most of their history. And correct me if I'm wrong, but outside of Akron and Toledo who are the pits of the conference academically speaking, doesn't EMU have a poor academic profile as well? I seem to remember Buffalo, Miami, and Western Michigan being considered the cream of the conference in that regard, with schools like BG, Kent, and Ball State being in the middle group.

If a school doesn't measure up academically or athletically, what good is it for your league? A bunch of great athletes in swimming and diving and cross country I guess.

Yes, depending on how you look at it.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching considers all MAC schools doctoral granting research universities except Eastern Michigan, which it categorizes as a master's degree institution. Based on this, Newsweek's annual rankings of colleges and universities have ranked all MAC schools among national universities except Eastern Michigan, which Carnegie regards as a large master's level university. This is based on the school's relatively few doctoral offerings, I believe.

By these measures, Marshall is also a master's level, regional university.

On the other hand, in terms of average admission scores, I don't know of much difference. Miami and Ohio are somewhat more selective than the rest of the MAC. Admission standards appear to be similar for the rest of the MAC, except Toledo, which is the conference's only open admissions university.

If that sentence is any indication, Bowling Green continues to lag well behind Toledo in academics. That is REALLY bad.

Interesting note: Toledo, with their "big" arena and "big" city, drew no more for the NCAA Womens Tournament first round than BG did a couple years ago.
