Success.

DeMarkeo Lyshe was on scholarship this last season.

@kldavis12 I saw that Jans said he had two scholarships available. Does that mean Lyshe is on scholarship? - 26 Mar

This likely means 4 scholarships in play for 2014-2015 which might be better for the program then throwing three scholarships at the scraps that are available this offseason.

1 Clarke 4--Lyshe 4--Edwards 1
2 Henderson 4--Tisdale 2--Denny 1/2
3 Parker 3--Orr 3
4 Holmes 4--Mayleben 1
5 Gomez 3

That's what the roster seems to look like now.

Good to hear about Denny, and I think that word is just a combo term for Medical Redshirt. I also saw Chauncey Orr is planning on coming back. I actually think he, like the rest of the returning players, could flourish under Jans.

I think it is more than fair like any staff SHOULD do after EACH season and re-evaluate whether a coaching change has taken place or not. At some kids get over recruited. Better players are brought in. BG did not hire Coach Jans to do a job with one hand tied behind hid back.

Natural attrition will occur most years, that process is expedited when staff changes. We're not going to have 8 new players next year, but kids (I wont name, who are 19-23 yr old kids doing something I would've loved to do) deserve to know whether they will play in the future or if their future is better served elsewhere.
After a bit of research and hanging out on Twitter for a couple of days, I'm beginning to understand that the previous coach didn't exactly recruit or play players based on abilities or practice performance. Now, why would a new coach evaluate the same way as the old coach? What worked for one might not work for Coach Jans and it would be stupid to expect him to try, especially since the old coach didn't win with his recruits.

What I wonder is, what level of interaction can coach Jans do with the players before the end of the semester and be within NCAA guidelines? Also, since basketball coaching is not a democracy, they don't add up all the healthy bodies , divide it into 200 and give everybody the average minutes for playing time :-)

It's going to be exciting! Go Jans!

I wish I lived nearby and could be a fly on the wall to see as the roster shakes out. This will be the most exciting offseason that I can remember. Guys could be starting or not even on the roster. With Jans Juco connections this could be turned around this season. In college basketball it doesn't take many players.

Wagner seconded the Lyshe scholarship thing.

Someone brought up the point that maybe Orr wasn't previously on scholarship because his dad was an employee but now could be. I never thought of that before. We could have used that to our advantage and had 14 scholarship basketball players.

This is info from someone close to the U and it's basketball program. Lyshe is on schol., the new kid from Fla. is using one, which leaves two more to fill. I believe 13 is the max for men, 14 for women... So there ARE only 2 avail. :-k

61,

Absolutely, 13 is the max for men. BGSU will honor the kid from Florida's scholarship unless he would asked to be released due to the coaching change or he wouldn't qualify (presumably).

He has already signed his LOI which I think is ridiculous. Nothing against the kid, I've never watched his tape or anything else but barring a fish/loaves of bread miracle (pun intended) Orr was NOT coming back this year and that is also from people VERY close to the situation, so why is the Ath Dept allowing him to continue to sign kids when his efforts of the previous six years have turned in limited positive results? I don't mind taking the kids verbal but there is NO reason for him to have signed early when Stevie Wonder could see Orr wasn't coming back. Nice way to handcuff the new coach

I think that's a good point. I feel even worse for the kid. Although now he is in a better situation even if he doesn't realize it. I have seen tape. He will atleast be a solid backup at the 1 and 2.

Just saw that Jans was named one of the top 20 recruiting assistants in the country in 2013 by Jeff Goodman of ESPN based on a survey of 200 college coaches. I can't wait to see what he does with these scholarships.

If all remained the same from last year

1 Clarke 4--Lyshe 4--Joseph 3
2 Henderson 4--Tisdale 2--Denny 1/2
3 Parker 3--Orr 3
4 Holmes 4--Mayleben 1
5 Gomez 3

My guess

1 Joseph 3--Tisdale 2--Lyshe 4
2 Henderson 4--Clarke 4--Denny 1/2
3 Parker 3--Orr 3
4 Holmes 4--Mayleben 1
5 Gomez 3

2 more schollies to go for this season.

It doesn't look like we offered Austin yet but if we do that's another guard. Assuming no more defections we are very thin at the 5 spot.

1 Joseph 3--Tisdale 2-Austin 3--Lyshe 4
2 Henderson 4--Clarke 4--Denny 1
3 Parker 3--Orr 3
4 Holmes 4-Dickerson 3
5 Gomez 3--Mayleben 1

If we offer another guard I am going to assume more defections. We need another big man. You can never have enough guards though. Especially when we are in desperate need of a true pg.

I was always so envious of the guards and athletes that Kent and Akron always had in the backcourt and I hope we finally get there under Jans. With that said I am not sure we see any other defections. Despite my belief that we need a Center badly I bet Holmes plays there and the rotation looks like this. (I'm assuming Dickerson signs which I think is likely reading his tweets and that Austin signs which I am not so sure about because he hasn't gotten an offer yet and we just signed a PG)

1 Joseph 3-Austin 3
2 Henderson 4-Clarke 4
3 Orr 3-Tisdale 2
4 Parker 3--Dickerson 3
5 Holmes 4

That leave 4 guys in Gomez-Denny-Mayleben and Lyshe as guys I am no sure how they fit.

Gomez has 2 years left of eligibility and transferred once already so I don't see him going anywhere even if he won't see a ton of time here. I think he is capable of a dozen or so decent minutes but can't be he center I think we need.

Denny at the very least has a nice outside shot for a team that lacked that for years. He can eventually play a role certainly.

Lyshe isn't going anywhere for his senior year after gaining a scholarship.

Mayleben came on with less than stellar hs numbers but has legit size at 6-9 230. He also seems to be really involved with the team as he seems to be front and center in all the pictures at events and I think someone said he is dating a female player.
