New Riddell SpeedFlex helmets article

Post by BGSU33 »

Saw this up on ESPN, talks about the new look and design of the helmet. Most notable is the cutout design on the crown which actually flexes (shown in the video) and the facemask is not attached by the nose bumper any longer and only on the sides and actually flexes/absorbs too:

Here's a little more on helmets in an interesting study that U of R did this season. They interviewed the guy on the local news last night, and his take on it was if everyone wore helmets with sensors that were monitored during the game, then they could be taken out at times when there were excessive traumas.

Agree or not, this is probably where the sport is going. . .

It has to...I don't know how in good conscience you can send these kids out there to take repeated shots to the head without taking every single precaution available to make the sport safer. Without, of course, drastically changing the nature of the game. I'd rather see no football than two hand tap or flag football. :)
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

It's interesting that they're doing so much with helmets when people like Lou Holtz are saying the best thing to do is eliminate them altogether.

Many people say eliminating the helmet would be the way to solve all of the problems, because players would play safer without the false sense of security a helmet provides. Unfortunately, we would probably have 5-10 players die in that first year without helmets.
