Re: 2014 Offseason Roster tracker
I keep reading that Parker is a 3 and shouldn't play the 4. I would argue that his game is much closer to a 4 than it would be a 2. He doesn't hesitate to bang down low, is aggressive around the basket and I don't see a ton of outside shooting touch or lateral quickness for the 2. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he ended up starting at the 4 not because I think it's his perfect spot but because we have no 5, Holmes can somewhat play the 5 and Orr is an adequate starter at the 3.

BREAKING NEWS: Coach Jans finds little used NCAA rule where if the previous coach didn't use all of his allotted schoarships the year before that's the amount of extra players you get to have the next year.
Re: 2014 Offseason Roster tracker
BG has made more offers in the last 10 days than it did in the previous 710 days. Amazing what some urgency will do.

I don't see Parker as 4...he's not exactly a bruiser and most importantly, his skill set is ideal to play the 3. He can catch and shoot facing the basket and he has the ability to get to the basket from the wing. Sticking him in the blocks negates two of his best attributes.
I like Holmes as a PF with Worrell backing him up because they're skill sets are redundant. Give me Gomez and Mayleben at the 5 setting screens from the high post and Parker on the wing where he can maximize his versatility. Chauncey and the rest of the backcourt (whomever is left) can duke it out for minutes at the two. We appear to be set at PG with the two JUCO's

I don't think Parker is that great of a shooter and he has limited range. We don't want him shooting threes in anyway. I like what you are saying about Gomez and Mayleben and their role but my guess is that it will be a case of Jans finding his five best guys and putting them on the floor. Worrell and Holmes might be similar but I think the dropoff in talent to Gomez will be so great from Worrell and Orr that we will start that smaller lineup.

Re: 2014 Offseason Roster tracker
Parker is NOT and should NOT be used as a low post banger. Parker is a 3 and would/should play ahead of Orr. Parker is not a bad shooter, and who knows how much he'll improve in the off-season, especially now that we have a staff that will push players and hold their feet to the fire.
I agree that after Parker, Worrell, and Holmes, the talent dropoff with Gomez/Maybelen is huge. The former 3 are too good not to all have major minutes, if none of them fit into prototypical SF/PF/C roles.
At guard, it'll be fun watching the competition. I expect Joseph to be plug-and-play at the position, although I'm betting he doesn't have the pure athleticism of Clarke, Henderson, and Tisdale.

Do you have to be a "banger" to play the 4? I agree it's ideal but most of Parker's points came in the paint. Can he be an active stretch four. He has almost no range. He is so active around the basket that I didn't realize he weighs only 205. Doesn't seem so thin. I think that might be our best lineup in regards to our top 5 players. And I like Orr's game. We don't have legitimate other options.BleedOrange wrote:Parker is NOT and should NOT be used as a low post banger. Parker is a 3 and would/should play ahead of Orr. Not sure if this was a joke or not on your part. But we now show 14 on roster, with only 13 " legal scholarships to grant. Could one of the JUCO PG's be redshirted or are some doubts on somebody not qualifying ? Either way, this been more men's BB activity that we've seen in several yrs!

61,
Yes, it was a bad attempt at humor. We do show 14 scholarshipped players. My guess is its very likely someone (probably but I DO NOT have inside knowledge) will feel the minutes crunch one of the guard spots and choose to spend their time elsewhere.
If it happens in the frontcourt, I only ask they take a buddy from the backcourt as well, so we could find another post type player

Catch and shoot on the wing isn't necessarily abiut shooting three's....I hink Parker has a nice mid range outside shot and he'll force the defense to extend a bit towards the edge. I like the Gomez and the Mayleben in the high post because they're bigger bodies with a rep for facing the basket and shooting. Set a screen and roll or step back and set up for a j.
You can play Parker at 4...Coach Belein at UM did something like that in playing GR3 at the 4...then again, he also had Stauskas , Levert and Walton to go with him.
I just think we best utilize all of our guys keeping Parker at 3, Holmes at 4 and Gomez at the 5

I think what you say is ideal if Cam Black had another year of eligibility. At times last year I thought Gomez wasn't a huge drop off from Cam and could give us similar minutes and play. At others it seemed like an enormous drop off.Flipper wrote:Catch and shoot on the wing isn't necessarily abiut shooting three's....I hink Parker has a nice mid range outside shot and he'll force the defense to extend a bit towards the edge. And what you say about Parker may be true, but he is so good at scoring in traffic and getting layups that I think that's his best trait and it makes me focus on it instead of the other areas.

Not sure why everyone is so confused. It is pretty obvious that Lyshe was on scholarship last year because we decided not to use available scholarships and Jans took his scholarship away, opening up another one. Wasn't this talked about during the season? So you had Sealey and Black graduate (2 schollies) and use the two that Orr did not use (one of which included Lyshe)

Re: 2014 Offseason Roster tracker
Because the SID for basketball said Lyshe was on scholarship last year and the head coach said he had 2 scholarships available just about a month ago. Then Edwards was out and we had 3 and then suddenly we had four.BGfalcon2010 wrote:Not sure why everyone is so confused. Your premise that Jans took his scholarship away wasn't known until today.
