I really hope he still comes to BG, this kid was fantastic to watch play high school football and very likely is our QB of the future:
There are always going to be some college football players or incoming football players hearing their names called during the Major League Baseball Draft. Nebraska has already lost a wide receiver recruit to the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Diego Padres drafted Johnny Manziel. Bowling Green could also be at risk of losing an incoming freshman quarterback.
The Cleveland Indians drafted Cody Callaway, a quarterback in Bowling Green’s recent recruiting class, in the 34th round on Saturday in the MLB draft. Callaway was a two-sport star in high school, earning all-state honors in both football and baseball, and he was expected to play both sports at Bowling Green. His father also played baseball at Bowling Green.
Callaway’s position is different from the one that played out for Monte Harrison. Harrison was also heading to college, at Nebraska, to play football and baseball. Those plans changed when the Brewers drafted him with the 50th overall pick in the MLB draft, which comes with a slotted value of a little over $1 million in bonus money. The Brewers sweetened the deal by agreeing to $1.8 million in bonus money if Harrison chose to get started on his path to the majors instead of attending Nebraska to play wide receiver and baseball. Harrison accepted that offer and has been signed by the major league club.
Callaway may be much more likely to follow through with his two-sport college plans. The late draft pick lacks the financial incentive Harrison was offered and a few years at the college level could be a benefit further down the road.

Re: QB recruit Cody Callaway drafted by Cleveland Indians
IIRC...it makes almost no sense for any HS athlete drafted after the 10th round to skip college unless they throw crazy over the slot money at you. MLB has instituted some pretty harsh penalties for teams exceeding the bonus pool, so teams don't really go crazy on those lower picks like they used to. So...unless he's always wanted to be an Indian and doesn't care about the money, I too would expect him to play at BG.

Re: QB recruit Cody Callaway drafted by Cleveland Indians
Yeah, I'd be pretty surprised to see a kid pass on a full schollie and 2 sport shot at college as a 34th round draft pick. Not with overslot money not really being what it used to be.
Pretty sure it's still within NCAA rules for him to play football if he did sign to play baseball as well, isn't it? Doesn't happen too often, but I know some kids used to play college football while playing minor league baseball.

John Elway played minor league baseball with the Yankees while still playing football at Stanford. That worked out pretty well...Flipper wrote:IIRC...it makes almost no sense for any HS athlete drafted after the 10th round to skip college unless they throw crazy over the slot money at you. WTF does John Elway have to do with Cody Callaway? He's Cody Callaway...he's not John Elway...he's not Kirk Gibson, hell he isn't even Drew Henson. He's a nice two sport MAC prospect....guys at his level aren't going to have the leverage to tell the Indians, no I don't want to play fall instructional or winter league ball..no I want to don the seal brown and orange of the BG Falcons so I can play QB against Kent State.

He has until July 15th to sign
Cody Callaway, who recently graduated from Midview High School, is in a conundrum.
However, it’s a conundrum that most people would be ecstatic to face.
The issue lies in that Callaway has committed to play football and baseball for Bowling Green next year, yet he was drafted by the Indians in the 34th round with the 1,028th overall pick.
“It’s a nice place to be in,” Callaway said. “I have some thinking to do and some talking with my family. But either way, it’s a decision where I really can’t go wrong.”
The decision will not be an easy one for Callaway. He was All-Ohio in baseball and football this season, making the Division II second team in both. He passed for 2,496 yards and 24 touchdowns with only three interceptions this fall. He batted .280 (21-for-75) with 14 runs, 25 RBI and four homers in the spring.
“Getting drafted by the Indians is cool,” Callaway said. “But I really value the scholarship from BG. I don’t want to just throw that away, either.”
The Indians called Callaway to let him know that they were drafting him. However, had they simply took him and not informed him, it would not have taken long for Callaway to know.
“They called and like, right after I hung up, my phone blew up,” he said. “Texts, Twitter, calls. Everything you could think of.”
For now, the decision can wait. Callaway has until July 15 to sign. In the meantime, the Midview senior is simply enjoying life post-graduation and the fact that his hometown team finds him a strong player that they want.
“The fact that the Indians took me makes the entire thing even cooler,” he said. “I’ve loved that team since I was little. My mom actually found a picture of me in a full Indians uniform not too long ago. It was cool.”
Midview coach Scott Jalowiec said that he is proud that his player was drafted, but that he’s a bit surprised it took so long for him to go.
“I really thought he would go earlier,” Jalowiec said. “I know that some of the teams had been in contact with him as early as the eighth round. His dad actually texted me saying that one of the teams was going to take him in the eighth. I’m not sure what happened there.
“Regardless, I’m happy that he was taken. He’s a great player and he deserves it. Any team has to be happy with the leadership he will give them and the defensive presence he has on the left side.”
Callaway, who played shortstop in high school, said that he’d be up for a switch to third if needed.
“I’m willing to change to whatever position they would want me to,” he said. “That’s if I go with them. I’m still not sure.”
Jalowiec thinks that Callaway is in the best position he could be.
“The ball is in Cody’s court,” he said. “If he goes with the Indians, he is one step closer to his dreams. If he goes to BG, he gets a great education and gets to continue playing two sports he enjoys. And, there’s still the possibility of him getting drafted again, either in the MLB or the NFL draft.”

Re: QB recruit Cody Callaway drafted by Cleveland Indians
Callaway chose to come to BG!!! I think this was a very wise decision on his part. He can play both football and baseball at BG and has a shot at excelling in both sports. Baseball will still be there for him in when he's finished at BG if he still decides to play. This kid has potential to be a star in both sports and I hope he has a great dual career as Falcon.
