Baylor WR Transferring

Post by jpfalcon09 »

ESPN is reporting that troubled Baylor WR Robbie Rhodes is transferring to BG. Art Briles had removed him from the team in May for "undisclosed reasons" but he's had some brushes with the law.

BG could possibly have Dieter, Moore, Lewis and Rhodes as their top 4 WR next year. That's scary.

Mixed feelings. Without researching what he has done or been accused of, I love the idea of picking up someone that highly regarded as a player as long as he can leave the baggage behind. I get the feeling Babers is that Phil Jackson Zen master type coach who can work with almost anyone, but ultimately won't put up with nonsense. I hope it all works out.

Does this say he's transferring THIS yr.? Then you're right about next yr....otherwise, he's got to sit out a yr.

He has to sit out 2014.

Transferring this year, so next year, meaning 2015, is right.

I looked him up and what he's done isn't a deal breaker to me. I just wouldn't want to see it continue to be an ongoing problem. With a short leash, I feel he deserves a shot to follow through on his promise that he's learned his lesson.

He was ranked ***** by both Scout and 24/7 and **** by ESPN and Rivals. Pretty sure we've never had a ***** recruit here before.

Let's see if he can go a full year without getting arrested again. Then I'll get excited.

Extremely-talented wide receiver kicked off Baylor for drugs - where have I heard this before?

I love bringing in these talented transfers but I just have to say a key to the success we had under Clawson was building the team from the foundation. No shortcuts. There were a couple of great transfer receivers in Jorden and Cooper in 2010-11, but the core players of the title run really only included one transfer, Chief. I'm not against transfers but I do believe the best way to build a program is solid recruiting followed by continuous player development.

That being said ... our receiving corps is going to be sick. Between some great players who started here as freshmen and now three big time transfers, I think we will have the best receiving corps over the next few years that I've ever seen in the MAC.

This particular transfer situation is different, this is a guy who is trying to prove himself again and he feels comfortable with coach Babers who I'm sure recruited him at Baylor. I agree with you on the foundation, but the staff has already generated 11 verbals for next year's class which is a huge number for it only being July. I'm okay with supplementing the roster with guys like this when it's already a strength of the team.

It's certainly worth taking the chance. And it's good that he has to sit out a year too. If he can stay clean and out of trouble for year that would certainly be a good sign that he's got it figured out.

This is good news and I agree with those who've said the upside outweighs the downside.

More generally speaking, though, we really shouldn't have to "reach" or take too many chances in recruiting given where we're currently at as a program, particularly at the offensive skill positions in this type of scheme.

The difference between a good WR here and one at Baylor is staggering. We are talking about a 4* WR recruited to the school/program/coach that put out Josh Gordon, Terrence Williams and Kendall Wright. I know we like our players but this is a completely different level if he pans out.
