The reason that bigger cities are more expensive to fly into often has to do with local taxes enforced upon airports by the city in which they're located.
For example.. I live in Chicago and know that both Midway and O'Hare charged destination charges and landing fees to all airlines that use their runways. Part of that is of course for airport costs, but some of it also goes to taxes.
Smaller cities often have lower tax rates than the big ones which could account for the difference in cost from flying into Cleveland or landing in Toledo.
As for trying to figure out why flying into Cleveland costs more than getting a connecting flight in Cleveland and going to toledo.. i have no freakin' clue

I'll vouch for the Akron Canton airport, it is a whole lot easier than dealing with Cleveland Hopkins, besides for you out of staters it's closer to the Rubber Bowl and that sub-par field Kent has...both about 30 mins away.

As for other airports? Just avoid Charlotte for pre-XMAS bowl games.

Why? I made it through there coming back from the GMAC Bowl without any problem at all - my three hour layover was only two hours. Even got to eat at one of my favorite Chinese restraunts (sp?) too.
