Young DBs Need to Step Up

Post by Rollo83 »

Hustlebelt story on our DBs and our defense. Looks like we'll be young in the secondary this year.

Not a bad story other than an incorrect name for DB coach, NICK MONROE( not Moore) #-o
( he did correct it late in article).

The DBs aren't really young though. The starters will be Hunter, Adjei-Barimah, Sutton and Ward, who are all upper-classmen. I'm sure Johnson and Ballew will slot in here and there.

Gourdine played a bit last year and Delk and Denard Turner are also on hand. We really aren't young in the secondary at all....

The secondary will have some first time starters but they have real experience, not just clean up duty. I'm not too worried. Plus Hunter has All-MAC written all over him.

Will be great to have Lockdown Hunter back...he and Jude are chomping at the bit to get on the field this year. I think our secondary will be solid...

Lots of experience with the 3/4 WR sets teams used last year. We just have to hope everyone stays healthy. Based on last year, it's a bit shocking that Truss started out as a walk-on (I think) and Foster wasn't even predicted to be a starter going into camp. When seniors are your leaders/best players good things usually happen.

yes, Truss began as a walk-on. We've had pretty good success with walk-ons, I think. I'm not sure what the norm is but it seems we have a handful each year that stick and make good contributions. Some preferred and others not. Truss, Joplin, Pohlman, Royster, Burbrink, Cairo, Bush, Osborne, Mack etc.....

Foster was a safety for 3 years and you are right, he was converted that spring to CB. He did a heck of a job given CB is very difficult position especially the way Clawson/Elko had them on islands virtually all year.

Martin Bayless wasn't a bad "walk-on" either! ;)

As I remember, he walked on and became a STARTER and SCHOLARSHIP player in the first week of fall practice!
