THIS is the "best" defense Babers has been around???

Post by BGSU33 »

Hey, he said it, not me: "I may have the best defensive I've ever had as a football coach," said Babers.

I.....I....I don't really know how to even respond to that after seeing this. I can't even remember the last time we were DESTROYED on defense like this. We're being shredded beyond belief right now.

This looks like a Lovit "Bend but don't break" defense.

Right now I would take that defense. Their QB set a school record before the third quarter ended. I feel like we're playing 8 on defense to their 11 on offense.

I haven't felt this kind of panic about our coaching situation since 2000, when Buffalo broke something like a 14-game losing streak against Gary Blackney (who announced his resignation three days later).

Clearly, our offense is going to be okay. But, this defense? It is as if Chris Farley has been in charge all summer. This is awful.

Maybe there are alternate explanations. Maybe WKU has an exceptional receiving corps -- athletic, talented blockers who give us match up problems in the same way that Indiana did last year. Maybe it's those damned chrome helmets.

But I don't know. Does Kim McCloud have any idea what he's doing?

This is awful.

I had some concerns about having a new staff and the changes that would follow but I felt confident in what we returned. But never did I expect to see this tonight. I actually thought we'd win 27-23 or something close to that in a competitive game. Never anything like this.

This was a good point by @orangeandbrown:
You aren't going to get any sympathy here for the "adjusting to a new system" argument. Changing to a new system was a choice, first made by our AD and then by our Coach. NIU has stayed competitive through coaching changes by not changing systems--by keeping the same system. A coach like that could have been hired and the coach could have coached that way. If there are problems with an "adjustment" it is on them.

That said, our offense played pretty well, and the ceiling looks high. But the defense? Utter failure.

I really look forward to hearing some explanations.

It wasn't that long ago. Pretty much the 6 years prior to Clawson's arrival was like that every game. At least tonight we can attribute some of this crap to the change in defensive philosophy.

Having said that, i hope it gets better quick.

Defense is still defense. Change in philosophy or not that was down right pathetic. Sure, I expect it to get better but the concept of defense never changes and tonight was a monstrosity. Oh yeah, the offense sucked too.

This is what sometimes happens when a new coach comes in. BG has a revolving door of f'ball coaches coming and going. We can't keep the good ones and it's a crap shoot every-time a new one arrives. This staff, and I know it is only one game in, looks like they are very mediocre. BUT who knows at this point, WKU may win 10 games this year giving Jack Harbaugh something to smile about as his sons fight to keep their NFL jobs.

Yes, the DB's would not have tackled my 6 year old last night. Yes, the game plan to give receivers 10 yards was obviously foolish. Yes, punching a guy in the helmet was even more foolish.

Assume that we get those things cleaned up and the DBs look more like 2013 over te course of the season. I'm not sure that it matters much if the front 4 and blitzers (didn't see much there) can't pressure the qb more than once a game. I felt like the defense missed ouellet and Campbell more than anybody else.

Offense - when a true freshman is your most consistent performer, you're in trouble. I was a little concerned that all the focus on "#falconfast" would mean that the defense was completely neglected, but I thought they couldn't possibly be that far out of it. Looks like I was wrong for at least 1 week.

Scoring 60 on VMI next week won't do anything for me. This coaching staff better have a sensible defensive plan for Indiana. Any adjustment to the plan based on how the game plays out would also be a welcome sight.

Completely agree and I get the feeling this coaching staff will think it does.

I don't understand why didn't make any adjustments at all to try and defend WKU in the passing game. We were giving WKU so much cushion and we simply allowed let them to play pitch and catch with us. Time after time they kept running what look like essentially the same play to both sides of the field and kept executing and we never tried to take it away from them. We had them in second and third down with 5 or so yards to go and we were playing 10 yards off of them and all the receiver had to do was make the wide open catch to easily move the chains. Then on top of that we couldn't make a tackle which lead to huge plays on what could've been just a gain of a few yards.

Right out of the gate on their opening drive alone, six out of seven consecutive plays went for a first down. They exploited us on the first drive and we never ever adjusted the rest of the game. We never generated any kind of a pass rush and their QB simply sat back there and picked us apart. I am dumbfounded at how we just sat back with the same sort of coverage for the entire game and just never made an attempt to counter what they were doing.
