Kennedy Appointed To NCAA Men's Basketball Committee

KENT, Ohio — Kent State University Director of Athletics Laing Kennedy has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee the association announced. Kennedy’s five-year appointment is effective Sept. 1, 2005.
"I am honored and pleased to have the opportunity to represent the Mid-American Conference and Kent State University at a national level on this very prestigious committee," Kennedy said.
Kennedy is replacing Bob Bowlsby, athletics director at the University of Iowa, and Kennedy also becomes just the second representative from the MAC all-time on the committee. Former Miami University AD Richard Shrider served on the committee from 1981-1987.
The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee oversees the administration of the men’s basketball championship, including the selection of teams to the championship and staffing tournament sites.
"This is obviously a monumental appointment for our league," said Bob Gennarelli, MAC Associate Commissioner for External Operations. "It is just the second time the MAC has had representation on the committee. Kent State’s national basketball reputation and the commitment he has made to the basketball program, make Laing an obvious choice for the committee."
Kennedy, now in his 11th year at Kent State, previously served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee while AD at Cornell University. He was on that committee for five years, serving as chair for three years.
As the administrative chair for men’s basketball in the MAC, Kennedy already deals with conference’s head coaches as a liaison to the league and is very familiar with issues pertaining to MAC men’s basketball.
"It is a tribute to our league to have Laing appointed to the committee," Kent State basketball coach Jim Christian said. "To have somebody who has been around MAC basketball have a voice at the national level can only be a positive for our conference."
During Kennedy’s tenure at Kent State the Golden Flashes have won 36 MAC championships and 13 MAC Tournament titles, with the women’s athletics program winning the Jacoby Trophy, signifying all-sports excellence four times, while the men’s program has won the Reese Trophy twice. Kent State also finished 81st in the NACDA Director’s Cup, the fourth straight year Kent State has been the highest-ranked MAC institution.

Don't count on it but I also hope he can make a difference when he starts next year. This is an especially bad year for getting two team in with the way everyone is beating up on each other.McMetz811 wrote:Hopefully he can have more input with getting MAC schools in the tourney!
