Gus Schwieterman. Very very impressive recruited walk on from tiny Bethel HS in southern Miami County in OH. The Bethel Bees are one of the smaller schools in the state playing football. Good looking kid on the hoof and has now added enough weight/strength to jump in given our depth issues. Perfect example of taking full advantage of an opportunity and being ready. Proud of this kid.

Go Falcons!

A high school and BGSU buddy of mine coached Schwieterman @ Bethel and says he has a great motor. He will add weight but for a Frosh he's stepping up big time. He's attracting some SW OH coaches and folks up for games as well and that can't hurt recruiting.

I'm late with the post game comments, but I stayed in BG for the weekend to savor the victory with friends - and a sweet victory it was! I will admit that I was expecting to see us on the frowning side of a lopsided score. I loved the way our guys competed, played with fire and didn't give up on any of several occasions that they could have. That kind of competitive spirit gives me hope for the conference season.

Lewis, obviously was fantastic. That game winning catch was clutch and to make it one handed with the db grabbing his other hand was really impressive. Green was good as always. He never ceases to amaze me how tough he is and fearless at taking on guys so much bigger than himself, whether he's running with the ball or blocking. I like that they are using him a little more this year as a receiver out of the backfield and that will only serve to make it tougher on defenses.

I thought the offensive line played pretty well. With a few exceptions, they generally gave Knapke enough time to have a chance to get the ball away cleanly and on target. I would have liked to see us have a little better success with interior runs, but as it was, we were able to run it effectively enough to give the defense something else to defend. I also like that they didn't incur a lot of penalties (holds, false starts).

Knapke impressed me with his accuracy and decisiveness. He also made good decisions in throwing some balls away when the play wasn't there. The only real negative I could say was that he usually locked in on one receiver when the ball was snapped and never came off him. He forced a lot of throws to his target when he was often pretty well covered, while other guys were more open. That said, many of those throws were lasers right on the money, so they were completed anyway. I know it was only his 2nd collegiate start and going thru the reads to find the best option is something that will come with experience. Down the stretch he was looking exclusively to Lewis. It worked out this week, but I'm sure teams will see the film and gameplan accordingly. There are a lot of quality receivers out there, so hopefully as he gains experience, he will spread the ball around and make defenses defend the entire field. I don't want it to sound like I'm being too critical of him. Given his 2nd start, he played pretty darn well and although having MJ out for the year hurts us, Knapke showed that we can win with him and I'm betting he will get even better as he gets more time running the offense.

I thought the defense played hard, but they really broke down those last few possessions. Martin is simply not close to being back where he was before the knee injury. I give the kid tons of credit for making it back on the field and playing as well as he is, but it hasn't been that long and it just takes more time to fully get back. With Lynch also not in there and other guys playing at less than 100%, we are a bit outmanned against good offenses right now. Not looking forward to seeing us try to stop that Wisconsin run game next week. If there is a silver lining, at least the Badger passing game this year is down from what it usually is, so that might help a little. I can forsee a game similar to our 2005 matchup. Omar threw it all over the place and they couldn't stop our passing attack, but their run game ground us to a pulp. We could see something like that next week, with a lot of points scored by both sides. Hopefully, we can come through it with no more injuries and start to get healthier as we go into conference play. Hated to see Dieter, Hunter and Moore all go out last week and hope they are all ok moving foward.

After seeing the way we competed this week, I'm not as down on the season as I was 2 weeks ago and I still think we have a good chance at getting back to Detroit if things fall into place. For anyone that may still be reading at this point, my apologies for the very longwinded post........I guess I got carried away. #-o

That game was a blast to watch. A real back and forth slug fest. Tate could end up being the best pk we've had, at least that I can recall, and that's saying something. The only thing I would disagree with you on beaker is about spreading the ball around. 9 different guys had receptions. How often do you see that at any level? Lewis had the hot hand for sure. Knapke has been awesome so far and he should only keep getting better. Not sure how many remember what Omar looked like in relief of Harris, but there was a big drop off. He turned out alright as a starter the following year :) Sometimes experience is everything but Knapke jumped right in and the offense hasn't missed a beat. Hoping to see a hard fought game next week with no injuries and then get on with defending that title. Cupcake... heh

Me too. It was extremely impressive, especially the 3rd and 4th stops the defense was able to get. They will only get better and so will the offense. Knapke was exceptional. The inside runs are meant to set up the play action more than anything, but by the 3rd quarter they seemed to realize they were barely gaining any yards and wisely incorporated a few toss and pitch plays.

Greene is most dynamic in space when he has the opportunity to use his quickness. Getting him on the perimeter more instead of jamming him into the interior of the line will help the running game and get the offense in more manageable down and distance situations.

Definitely an entertaining, albeit nerve-racking, game to attend!

A few thoughts, mostly random about the game and experience:

Great to catch up with so many friends and great Falcons! The gameday experience at BG is light years above where it was when I began attending games in the mid-eighties and the tailgate culture has definitely evolved and improved in the 10 years since I regularly attended all home games. From providing bags for trash & recycle, to cheerleaders/dance team making the rounds to the team walk- all good stuff. Maybe look in to charcoal receptacles though so they don't need to ban charcoal grilling.

Sat in a new location- at the very top of U11- just to the South of the press box and affirms my thought that there are no bad seats in the stadium. I was concerned about being "far" away or obstructed by the press box but it provided an excellent view.

Roger Lewis is a beast. In the past we've had guys that based on body type (Chris Gallon) and athleticism (Charles Sharon) I've looked at and said "that guy could develop in to an NFL worthy receiver" with improvement, our system etc. With Lewis I look at him as the most advanced receiver I can remember at BG at such an early stage in his career. Now, I'm not drafting him tomorrow but damn he is impressive. I also noticed in the FINAL play of the game (IU's hail mary) he was on the goal line defending.

I noticed this on the replay- when IU was lining up to kickoff our staff on sidelines (not players) were pointing in unison back towards the endzone the kicking team was defending- anyone notice this or know the purpose?

This is a game that I think explains Babers Ball. We bend and bend and bend and stuff the run for the most part, but don't break on D and GO, GO, GO. Yes the glaring open field tackles REALLY stand out and the extra yards on the WRs allow some easy pitch and catch, but I think I'm coming around to the strategy. Once the D fully embraces how to play and NOT miss the tackles and force the other team to have to get 6 each possession this style will be deadly, especially in MAC play, but the O alone can be an equaliser against "superior" (traditional) styles. It's kind of the same mentality I like to play adult softball with- when I coach third base I rarely put up a stop sign as I like to make the outfielder make a perfect throw and the catcher apply a perfect tag. Yes sometimes you are thrown out by 4 feet, or give up a 40 yard TD, but a lot of times the throw is 10 feet over the catcher. I think Hammb hit it- football is evolving. After WKU I was pissed and thinking Brandon 2.0, but after letting it play out I do think it is different.

Overall a great weekend and if we can get luckier with the inuries and/or continue the NEXT MAN UP mentality I like where this team and overall program is headed.

If anybody can copy the Indy game to DVD, I would love to watch it again. Also, a couple of local friends never saw the game. Email me at [email protected] if you can help. Roll Along!

It's archived on ESPN3 if you have access to that site....
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
