THIS DEFENSE IS HORRIBLE!!!!

The numbers don't lie, BG is DEAD LAST in the NCAA in total defense through four games. Yes, I know these numbers can be debated a little because of how the non-conference schedules vary from team to team, but it's not even a debatable topic right now that BG ranks the worst defense in the entire nation at this point allowing 616 ypg! And it's not even close to the next team in front of us, which is UNLV at 566 ypg. BG is next to dead last in pass defense and four spots from dead last in pass defense in the NCAA.

Just saw this tweet: BG allowed just 321 ypg on defense in '13 but is #128 in the NCAA this year (dead last) yielding 615 ypg! Holy $hit! I knew we were bad but WTF.

It's mind boggling that we are allowing nearly 300 ypg more than we did last season. This defense needs to come out and prove something Saturday. And by prove, I mean prove to everyone - themselves, the team, the MAC, etc. As battered as we've been on the road this year allowing over 700 ypg in both games, if we go up to Amherst and get shredded again you can likely stick a fork in us getting this defense to play even halfway decent this year.

I am not concerned about what the offense did or did not do last week, or against IU, or VMI, or WKU.

I am not concerned with how the defense has played thus far this season.

I am only concerned with how we play for the next 9 MAC games this season along with the bowl game. And I am not concerned with Buffalo, Ohio, Western Michigan, Akron, Kent State, Toledo or Ball State at this time - I am only concerned about UMass this week.

Love your optimism, but after the last two weeks, I don't see it happening. That wasn't exactly Texas A&M that shredded the pass defense today -- it was UMass.

YPG is one of the worst stats to judge a defense by...it's like using RBI's to judge a hitter in baseball. We're going to give up yards....we run 100 plays the other guys run somewhere in the 80's to 90's...we're going to give up yards (and the game is going to take forever to play). I'd like to see the yards per play come down...specifically YPC because that will mean we aren't getting burned for 60, 80 and 32 yd TD passes like we were against UMass.

Of course..the ultimate measure of a defense is points per game...in our case points per possession and red zone defense are probably going to be more illustrative than simply looking at the yards the other guys get.

Its 70 yards worse than anyone the last 2 years. I think it's worth discussing. Other teams run this type of offense.

And that's true to a point. But it is a little bit like a surgeon operating on the wrong limb, forgetting to use anesthesia, dropping an instrument into the body, nicking an artery and then performing CPR to save the patient and taking credit for being a life-saver.

What's more he also pointed that WKU, Wisconsin and UMass all had players set school records against us. Think about that for just a minute.....in three games already this season, three schools set school records. As in most in their history. EVER. And we're not playing teams like UTSA who just started a program a few years ago or ODU who took 50 years off. It begs the question, has another team besides BG ever had this happen to them in NCAA history ever?
