2014 Offseason Roster tracker
Re: 2014 Offseason Roster tracker
Personally I definitely see Parker as a 3. No, he's not going to be hitting a lot of jumpers beyond the arc, but I think he's got some catch and shoot ability out on the wings or at the top of the key.
More importantly though, when it comes to playing time, I don't think it really matters that we fit these guys into these roles. One of the beauties of MAC basketball is that nobody has a true fit for all 5 positions on the court. It's just not possible. The reason I'd like to see Holmes & Worrell out there at the same time, even if their skillsets are almost redundant, is because I don't think anybody in the MAC can match that. They're not likely to have to face more than one or two true Centers all year anyhow, most MAC teams are playing 6-9, 6-10 at that slot. Why not through a couple of guys out there that are far more athletic than most other big guys in the MAC?
I'm a huge proponent of having your best 5 on the court regardless of whether or not they fit the defined roles of the 5 positions. Obviously you need your best ball handler/court vision guy at the PG spot, but otherwise, get your best 4 others out there. If you're playing 3 guards, so be it. If you're playing 2 PFs, so be it. I want my best 5 guys on the court for the most minutes.
And really all I'm worried about is avoiding what we saw under Orr. Holmes shouldn't have been relegated to under 19 mins a game because he was just considered Calhoun's backup. From the looks of Worrell and athlete of that caliber should be playing 25-30 minutes per game right away, even if he is a similar skillset to Holmes.

A nice article in the Sentinel that puts most of this all together. Lyshe will be a walk-on and everybody starts with a clean slate. As it should be. http://www.sent-trib.com/bgsu-sports/fa ... nth-5-2-14" target="_blank
Instead of a single point guard, we might see two or three at a time! Yay. Also, a Detroit road game and Cleveland State at the Stroh Center would be great.

Yup, yup, and yup. You don't play Gomez/Maybelen in front of a talent like Worrell just because the seem to fit a certain mold. Worrell, Holmes, and Parker should start on the front line - if we start 3 forwards and 2 guards, fine.hammb wrote:Personally I definitely see Parker as a 3. This is also why guys like Clarke, Henderson, and Tisdale should see playing time in front of Orr. The talent/athleticism differential is just too damned wide. (Now that Orr's father is no longer the coach, we have no reason to expect Orr to play in front of vastly more talented players like he had been.)
I see no reason for Gomez, Maybelen, or Orr to see any more than 10 minutes per game each.

Re: 2014 Offseason Roster tracker
You play Gomez and Mayleben because they compliment Holmes' skill set. You can't play two guys that can only function within 5-10 ft of the rim because you clog the lane and that will inevitably make life more difficult for Parker and the guards.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: 2014 Offseason Roster tracker
Good Lord, a full roster and a coach who puts an emphasis on having a strong PG.
I just got all tingly in my personal area.
Is it just me, or does even reading about the team now create a level of excitement we haven't felt about BG basketball in more than a decade?
Whatever it is, I can't wait until football season starts, because I expect it to be a really good year -- and now I know that when football ends, I'm going to have more than women's basketball to get me psyched during the winter months. Men's basketball should be REALLY fun to watch (instead of throwing me into a deep depression)...and hockey has made monumental strides in the past two seasons.
My goodness, but it's nice to see things turning around in the men's sports...but especially basketball.

No, you DON'T play borderline D1 talents Gomez and Maybelen in front of athletic freaks. "Hey, I like your shirt" is the only compliment those 2 guys have to offer.

Re: 2014 Offseason Roster tracker
Orr is a solid rotation guy. He deserves to start or be first off the bench if Parker is strictly a sf. I disagree that he is. I think he can and will give us quality minutes at the four. As hammb says positions don't tend to be strict in college. I don't think we have the big man depth to allow him to be a pure sf.
I am elated to have five guys on the roster who have played some point guard.

I also like Orr as the first off the bench/energy guy. I think he did great in that role his freshmen year

Sounds like one of our returning players could be in some academic trouble. Jans said one of our returnees is in "academic peril." I can think of one guy who I REALLY hope it isn't and I really hope whoever it is that he gets his academics in order this summer and can play.
GO BG!!!

Has anyone heard anything further about who this player might be, or if this is still an issue or if it's now one that's been resolved?BGSU33 wrote:Sounds like one of our returning players could be in some academic trouble. Starting to see some interesting info about guys roles. http://www.bgsufalcons.com/news/2014/10 ... ath=mbball" target="_blank
Downey talks about having two point guards. Looks like it's Austin and Joseph there. Then talks about big men and strictly talks about Parker, Holmes and Dickerson as in the mix as bigs and then mayleben. Gomez and worrell needing to do more to get time.
Things are starting to come together. I wish I could make that first scrimmage. Anyone going?

Do you mean the exhibition against ND College? I think I'm gonna go to that. If we're playing a public scrimmage prior to that I probably won't make it.Globetrotter wrote:Starting to see some interesting info about guys roles. http://www.bgsufalcons.com/news/2014/10 ... ath=mbball" target="_blank

Not sure that I'm going to stick around on Friday night for the Meet 'n' Greet thing, but I am anxious to see the team play, and I probably won't be able to make it to the opener since I think I'm going to tailgate for the UT football game.
