We seem to emphasize academics more than any school in the MAC. We had (and might still have) the academic person's office in the football suite at the Sebo Center right along with the offensive and defensive coordinators, unheard of almost anywhere else. We win awards, spend a ton of money from our meager budget on it and hold lavish banquets centered exclusively around academic achievement. When asked what we're going to do during the bye week getting ready for a championship run, the first thing our head football coach says is "focus on academics." Mmmmmm....

Now is the time for the "of course's": of course we want our athletes to succeed in the classroom, of course we want them to be well-rounded people, of course we want to retain the ideal of "student-athlete" when that is being deemphasized elsewhere and of course it's not a negative to succeed in the classroom. Still, I can't help but contrast our achievements in this realm with the yearly realities of the Reece and Jacoby Cup standings and wonder if an overemphasis might be at play (especially in the non-revenue sports) to the detriment of competitiveness, particularly with the previous administration.

One of the funniest threads on this site.

Long hail coach Richards! If only we had kept the golden boy. By now we would have swept the MAC the last few years, had multiple players on the World Cup team for next year, and caught the envy of the soccer world with play so sublime that would have put Pele to shame. We captured the essence of the beautiful game...

Or maybe we would have kept losing because that is what coach Richards excelled at the last few seasons.

The reason Greg Christopher always emphasized academic achievement is simple. The teams all stunk. That guy would do anything possible to divert anything negative about his performance. He was quick to make excuses and pass the buck.
The reason we don't do well in the Reese and Jacoby Cup is quite simple....Hockey. We don't get as much money from student fees as other MAC Schools do and we have to support hockey too. It is similar to football in that it spends significantly more than it brings in. We invest a lot of money in the "revenue sports" and unfortunately other than Baseball and Swimming we don't have coaches who overachieve with their resources, this we finish toward the bottom of the Reese and Jacoby Cups.

I don't think that's entirely fair...Gymnastics seems to be on an upward path...Track and Field seems to be doing better (incl cross country..at least on the women's side) the sad fact of the matter is hat we had a number of teams that were doing really, really badly. Getting them all to improve a lot at once is a tall order.

I like the emphasis on academics. You have to be able to sell something to parents and students when recruiting, particularly in the non revenue sports. being able to sit in a family's living room and credibly promise that their son or daughter will have every opportunity to obtain a degree has to be a huge selling point
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Maybe you have an ax to grind with Richards. Yeah his teams weren't doing nearly as well the last few years under his watch. Mr. Christopher gave him NO support whatsoever. Hell, his last season his record was 6-13-1, 3-7-1 MAC. The last THREE years this program has won a total of 6 matches, 3 in the MAC. Overall the last 3 years since his departure? The program is 6-45-4, 3-26-4 MAC. I HATE seeing any BG team lose, especially that often. We'll see what happens next fall....
