It's hard to read this article because of the outcome, but no question about how much it mattered in 2004:

At the end of the article, Linebacker Javon Burkes sums up what this rivalry should be about:
Even 10 years later — after diplomas, weddings, new jobs, babies — there still is one constant for the players who played in that game: they still don't like each other.
“Man, I’m not even going to sugar-coat it for you: I hate Toledo,” Burkes said. “Ten years later I still do. I still hate Toledo.
“And I still can’t believe we gave that damn game away.”
I have been on the Orange and Brown side of this rivalry since my freshman year in 1980. I was there on October 8th 1983 when the MAC record crowd of 33,527 saw that Evil Empire up north win 6-3 with the game ending in a steady rain.
The switch to November started in 2000 and other than 2011 and 2013 that is where it has been.
I agree to an extent that making this game the last game of the season would be nice, but I think having it on a Saturday is the most important factor regardless of the month. I still believe that gives us the best chance to allow the most number of people to attend. The reality is that our fan bases are fair weather fans for the most part, so an earlier date would give us a better chance for good weather.
I don't have THE answer, but it seems as if a Saturday date is a good place to start, and if I have a chance to talk to Chris Kingston this afternoon in the Anderson Club at the basketball game that's the message I'm going to deliver.
