Babers mentioned at Houston

Post by OptionQB »

Anytime these Texas area jobs come open .... This will be a recurring theme. Houston fired Tony Levine over the weekend and one of the names mentioned on a prominent site is Dino Babers.

I've got a hard time believing that A) Babers would consider leaving after only one year and B) Houston would consider hiring a guy with only one year of FBS experience, especially when that one year had a clunker of an ending. The only sense I see is that Babers has Texas connections including connections with Briles (who put Houston on the radar before moving to Baylor) and he runs the type of offense Houston likes to run.

I'd figure programs would sour on him after this year, I guess the hype is still there for other programs to want to take a look. If Dino is offered and wants to go, so be it. Arkansas State has survived numerous coaching changes the past few seasons and I think BG would as well. I don't see Babers leaving though unless its for a job he absolutely can't turn down. BG should also prepare to negotiate a ransom for his buyout like Colorado State did, might as well try to make some money if the guy doesn't want to be here.

If he gets an interview his agent should be commended. If he gets an offer his agent's take should be doubled.

Who knows, Auburn took Chizik from Iowa State after going 5-19 in two seasons in Ames.

It would make a ton of sense for Dino. His offense is better suited for good warm weather. He spent time at Baylor and Texas A&M, I'm sure he's more connected in Texas than he is Ohio. Would also be a nice raise.

If Houston is interested in him.....they must have had a bunch of people already tell them no.

On the contrary, I'm expecting Houston to get a lot of interested candidates.
It's hard to find better recruiting area than Houston, for starters.
Second, Houston has great history - Andre Ware anyone? - and has been on a solid upswing for the past decade.
Third, the AAC is a good league and is a solid step up from the MAC, C-USA, and SBC. It's on par with, or maybe a bit ahead of, the MWC.
And finally speaking of conferences, it is a matter of when, not if, the Big 12 chooses to expand. This past weekend was an indication that the Big 12 absolutely needs a championship game to determine an actual champion. They'll be adding two, maybe four, teams soon ... maybe even this offseason given the exclusion in the playoff. Cincinnati looks like a slam dunk for the Big 12. Even though the state of Texas is very well represented, I can't help but think that Houston could still be a nice member in the Big 12, given their history.

So yeah ... I expect there will be lots of interested candidates at Houston. Yet another reason I just can't see them actually looking at Babers after only one year here.

These media talking heads get paid to speculate on these kinds of things. If they didn't throw out names, then their employers would find someone else to sit in the chair and do it. I can't imagine that Houston could see how things have gone here this year and the level of dissatisfaction that this season has produced and still have any serious interest. If they are, more power to them. The heck with trying to negotiate with Houston for compensating us for us allowing them to take him away. I would be willing to pay them, just to make sure the deal happened.

They could make it a 2-fer and sign William Houston, as well.

It would be a horrible thing for us to have to got through the hiring process again....instabity seldom leads to success.

From an outsider's perspective, I can see Dino being a solid candidate. He has a history working with Briles and the spread, he had success at EIU and he made the MAC title game and beat a BIg10 tea without his #1 QB here in year one.

I can't see him being a serious contender for any job that is better than the one he is in now. Also doubt they go after a coach that went 7-6 in the MAC and meanwhile they fired their coach after going 7-5.

Personally I don't think he's a legit candidate...but if they offered him the job, he'd be on the first flight out of NW Ohio.
