1) Focus: If they are in fact running up there after practice and I personally saw a player during the MAC Championship week, where are their heads? Should be on academics and their team in my opinion.
2) Representation: The player I saw had the grey Adidas Falcon hoodie on with grey athletic department sweat pants, he stood out like a sore thumb and not just b/c I have a BGSU radar.
3)Behavior Pattern: The point fixing scandal at Toledo is still making headlines. I'm not suggesting anything close to that but do we want our student athletes engaged in this kind of behavior on an ongoing basis?
These are just my thoughts.
I agree with all of this. when I was in school I didn't have time to go to the Casino 4 days a week in Toledo and I didn't have what amounts to football players a 20+ hour a week job to try to balance.
Meh...I worked 25-30 hours a week all through college along with taking full time courseload, maintained a 3.8+ GPA, and still had time to have a damned good time on weekends and play some intramural sports as well.
It is a MASSIVE leap to go from going to the casino to play some cards and shaving points/fixing games. Trying to remember when the poker boom hit, but I think it was after I graduated when I added 15+ hours a week of poker to my habits... Which is still gambling, but also a game of skill and if you're good a damned fine way to make some side spending cash.
To me this, in itself, is a complete non-story and we, as fans, have absolutely NO right to harp on it. If they miss practices or meetings because of it? Problem. If they're skipping classes to go? Problem. If they're gambling addicts that are borrowing money to support the habit? Huge problem. Failing grades because of it? Problem.
Going to the casino to gamble and have some fun in the middle of the day when you don't have team or school obligations? Completely normal and no big deal whatsoever.
This just sounds like a bunch of whiny pissy fans that think since the team struggled down the stretch they should spend every waking moment trying to get better at football. Sure, we'd love a team full of those sorts of guys, but they're still college kids and I have no beef with them enjoying their free time in any legal manner they see fit. This is the same self righteous bullshit that fans pull when Manziel spends his weekends off in Vegas, or off-nights at the Cavs game. None of our business, and quite likely has no bearing on how well they play on the field or perform in the classroom. These are college kids...if they're not playing cards at the Casino they're just as likely to be playing video games in a dorm as they are to be studying the playbook.
