Couple points here- getting a free meal at a casino, in my understanding, because of casino play is not a violation because the athlete is receiving that benefit not because he is an athlete but because of his casino play which is open to anyone.
Agree with flip Casinos are less dangerous than many of the places the players already frequent. Am I a fan of casinos? No. But to say they are a gateway to all the bad in the world - bookies, backdoor card games etc. is a bit of a stretch and wreaks of the war on drugs cry that marijuana is a gateway drug. I would hope they didn't wear their athletic gear at the casino in the same way I would hope they don't go to the strip club or even Downtown in their team issued sweats. But other than the site of players in gear while playing, I don't see the big deal.
I almost feel that the mention of (legal) casinos were included in the Johnson story so we didn't have questions as to why two players were carrying around $1,500 and $3,000 in cash. So now the casino patronage has been unearthed.

All this talk of them losing tons of money is great, but do we know they're losing?
Are they playing poker? Poker is very much a game of skill and offers plenty of repeatable success. When the online poker boom hit I made a ton of side cash playing poker. Here we have a group of kids that are not allowed to have jobs, maybe they've taken up poker as a way to make some additional spending cash? I don't know, and neither does anybody here. But I have no problem with them gambling if it's not causing problems with school or with the team, and neither should any of you.
Unless, of course, you're some holier than thou that thinks gambling is wrong and should be outlawed everywhere. If that's the case you can feel however you want, your opinions mean little to me.
Gambling is legal. The kids are of age. To my knowledge nobody is struggling with academics or anything else of importance due to playing cards or whatever. This is, and should be for everyone, a non-issue.

Oh...and thanks all for the head's up on etiquette. I'll make sure I'm not wearing BG gear next time I hit a casino, brothel, or local watering hole. Would hate to embarrass the university and those associated with it.

Video games are probably much more of a threat to their well being (academic and athletic) than the casino. Heck, didn't the Kansas City Royals have to ban an app their players were spending too much time on??

Wonder if they'll be practicing for the game or practice gaming?
