We had two last year, it evens out.

Seems like a lot of flipping coaches from one side of the ball to the other, though. Thought we only did that with linemen...

Our OCs left for Tulsa so a shakeup on the offensive side was expected. However moving the DC to coach offensive players now forces a shakeup on the defensive side. Seeing our 2014 defensive results, especially how we started and finished the year, I can't say I'm upset about a defensive shakeup. I'm guessing Babers has an external guy he likes that he plans to hire as a new DC.

Maybe just promote Nick Monroe? Do we need a DB coach and a CB coach?

The report identified McCloud as an assistant coach. Is that different from an offensive coordinator?

Also, just reading these tea leaves, I suspect MarkL is correct and that Babers is looking at bringing in a new defensive coordinator.

It makes more sense to fill from the top then the bottom. You are going to get a much better overall coaching staff by seeking out OC ad DCs instead of a DB coach. We still have 2 coaches to replace, now we get 2 top candidates....hopefully. The D should be interesting. What DC comes in with his staff already chosen? OC will be a Babers system guy. Maybe even a high school coach.

obviously we had too many coaches overseeing positions that they shouldn't have been. If multiple guys are going to switch entire sides of the ball, I question if we 1. Hired the right HC or 2. Hired the right staff in the first place.

I know!....we should just give them all a raise and I'm sure they'll coach better next year!

So our defensive coordinator is moving to asst head coach and wide receivers coach? That tells me all I needed to know about our terrible defense this year.

Babers said "this allows some of our assistants to get back to their natural positions which they have played and coached at in the past, which will make our coaching staff more experienced and allow us to get the most out of our student-athletes.”

So you had a bunch of offensive coaches trying to run the defense this year? Unreal!

Here is the Blade article about all this...

Yikes, it makes zero sense to have McCloud coaching the defense if he's an offensive coach. I agree on promoting Monroe to DC as he has undoubtedly had a hand in recruiting most of the defensive guys.

Be interesting to see who runs the offense and hopefully it spells getting away from the predictable playcalls.

Coaching a position doesn't mean you would be good at coordinating a defense or calling plays.

I have a hair-brained idea - why don't we hire a DC or an OC who actually (insert sarcasm here) is a DC or an OC??? A noble idea maybe.... There has to be a few qualified and proven DC's and OC's out there at the FCS level who we could target. I understand that these positions are sometimes filled by promoting guys from a unit position below the coordinator level also, but can we at least get someone who specializes on the same side of that ball as they are coaching and coordinating??? This flip-flopping around of guys from this position over to there, and from over there to here, makes me believe one of two things: One, these guys are either extremely versatile in coaching numerous offensive and defensive positions. Or two, we are extremely disorganized and lack qualified coaches at those positions and now we're just trying to take a stab at it by doing this. My guy tells me it's that latter. Or, I guess we could also just try our hand at converting our video coordinator into one of the DC or OC roles and see how that goes.

McCloud has always been a defensive coach...look at his resume. DC at EIU and a career coaching the secondary before that. Hell, he played DB in college. Why he's now a positional coach on offense is the real question.
