20 of 21 losses to Akron and 12 in a row!!!

Post by BGSU33 »

Yes, it deserves its own thread! How in God's name can't we ever beat Akron?! This has to be a MAC record for futility against another conference opponent. It has to be.

Mike and I were there tonite. BG looked Baaaaad! Shooting was awful ( point guards were 1-14).. Akron did what most MAC teams will do...double on Holmes inside. If he can't kick it out to a RELIABLE outside shooter, we're in big trouble. Denny had only 2 pts until last 3-4 min. Or so, then hit a couple of 3's... Akron pretty much shut him down too. We had little off ball movement..guys kind of stood on perimeter etc. we looked tight on most shots hitting front of rim etc. if we get some scoring from guards, we have a shot. Tonite wasn't it.
Oddly enough, Josh Gomez scored 4pts. In last 1:30. I'm not sure I'd ever see him score before and perhaps he might have been useful against Akron's 6'11" ctr who owned the paint.

Well considering we had Louis Orr for 15 of those game vs Akron, is it really surprising?

I shut it off with around 4-5 minutes left...just couldn't take that Akron tool announcer any longer complaining about traveling calls on nearly every possession when they were winning by 20+

But I'm just going to say that from what I've seen of Gomez he would not have been useful in the important part of the game. Glad he got some points and minutes when it was over, but from what he's shown thus far he doesn't deserve anymore playing time than he's getting. Hell Mayleben doesn't really do anything to deserve the playing time he gets.

Right now we are really, REALLY thin at that position. Holmes is a stud, and Parker is developing into a good player as well. Other than those two there isn't anyone over 6'5 that can really play.

That game sucked and the lack of depth in the post was exposed, however... We have a team that's exciting to watch and mostly plays good solid ball. Things are headed in the right direction even faster than i hoped. They beat Kent and Ohio. The wins against Akron will come.
I'm enjoying this ride.

Oh yeah. I was disappointed in the way they competed last night, but the product on the court has been SOOOO much better this year than years past I can only get so upset about such a bad night. I'm confident Jans will have them ready to go on Saturday. WIsh I could be there for the game.

Hambb,
My only reason for a possible use of Gomez was to try to counter Akrons size advantage..also to protect Holmes. They were subbing off for def. Anyway, so use the big guy to at least try to neutralize the bigs that Akron threw out there.

Well I think Jan's was trying to use mayleben for that, and he has been the first big off the bench all year. Of course he was getting abused and doesn't have gomez's size so I get what you're saying.

I just think this team is pretty much screwed if they go against a decent front court and Holmes is in foul trouble.

Come to think of it, doesn't BG men's soccer have some ridiculous losing/winless streak to Akron also?
