Center 2015-2016?

Post by Globetrotter »

(Please ignore the group who always says enjoy now and can't compartmentalize and talk about 2015-2016). It will be interesting to see what happens at Center for us next year. At times Dickerson plays the spot at 6-5 which is not good. Mayleben is an option and we have Worrell and Friday coming in next season. I am actually very surprised we redshirted Worrell seeing how this year played out. We really could use another athletic big.

Sure missed the big tonight at Akron...they owned the paint on us.

The redshirting of Worrell has shocked me from the time I first heard it. He looked capable of giving us quality minutes when I saw him in the exhibition game, and I thought sure he'd be our 2nd option after Holmes. Seems to me it would have made sense to get him some time as a backup before we need him next year. I trust Jans far more than I trusted his predecessor, though, so there must be something there we don't know. Whether he needs to concentrate on his studies, needs to work harder in practice, or whatever. I'm sure there is a good reason he's being redshirted, but I hope he's ready to go for next year.

I'm with ya Globe. I'm enjoying the hell out of this season, and I'm never that worried about next year until it arrives when it comes to BG sports, but man are we going to be hurting without Holmes. We saw a glimpse last night...Holmes was in foul trouble and wasn't terribly effective when he was out there. Akron has always found a way to take him out of the game, and without his play we had nothing going at all. I shudder to think what we'd look like if we had to play without Holmes more frequently this year.

I don't see any other big on this roster that deserves more than token minutes at this level, so that's a definite concern for me. I'm not recruiting guy, so I don't know much about the Friday kid you mentioned, but I'm hoping he's ready to compete right away, and I hope Worrell is ready to give us big time minutes next year.

Friday seems good, but he is on an all home school team that just dominates. I have no idea how to judge them or their competition. From what I can tell by his stats he is a stretch 4/5. He is a 3* guy. The last time I checked his averages they were "Avging 12ppg, 51%fg 42%3pt 68%ft 7.3rpg, 2.1apg, 1.1bpg"

Jans probably will NOT focus on having prototypical centers. Such was/is the practice at Wichita State. I think he'll pursue the 6-7 to 6-8 guys that can run, jump, defend, etc. We'll see 3 forwards than 2 forward + 1 center.

Fair enough. Holmes fits that mold, and I'm actually quite fine with that. Especially in the MAC where they're rarely going to be matched up against a legit power center anyhow.

But we don't have any of those guys behind Holmes/Parker either ;) It's worthy of discussion, I think. I don't think we're going to be as reliant on the position as we are this year...Holmes is a stud that Jans inherited...I'm glad that he's building the team around him.

I agree, Center may be strong term for the subject line. But I think our lack of size is an important consideration.

Another thought is that this is really 2 teams. Jans is finishing up with what Orr left without wasting a year of Worrell. Then next year Worrell, Friday, Hluchowyz and Andrews become the centerpiece.

I would love to see us snatch a JUCO to play in the post. Next year we'll need someone who can come right in and play/contribute immediately as we'll have a glaring need there. Getting another JUCO similar to Holmes would be nice.

I'll be surprised if we don't have at least 2 more scholarships, as I fully expect another player not to return next season.

I've seen the team play live twice and on TV a couple of others. I have to say I am disappointed in Dickerson. He's got a thick body but still undersized to play in the middle. He's not very athletic at all and doesn't have a great shot. He looks like just another body that Jans can throw at opposing post players. Just don't expect him to make plays.

Good, skilled big men are at such a premium these days that I wonder what we'll find at the JUCO level that hasn't been picked over already? I think the Dickerson's of the world are out there but not much else that will help.

I would take 2-3 Dickerson's on any team. Maybe not the most skilled, but a tough, hard working kid, that does a lot of the dirty work on the boards, on the floor and can even shoot the 3 once in awhile.

He has one of the ugliest shots in terms of footwork I have seen. I am definitely a fan though. He reminds me of a slightly better germaine fitch.

Dickerson is the opposite of what Orr would recruit. A great fit on this team. Always brings energy. In a perfect world he would 6-8. He wouldn't have been available if he were. All three Juco players are reason we sit 10-4.

Germaine Fitch is exactly the comparison that I mentioned during the game last weekend.

Although I would probably say post knee injury Germaine. Still a very effective player, but doesn't have the insane hops that Germaine had before his first injury.
