Zach Denny

Great game yesterday by Zach Denny lead the way in the second half. Did anyone besides me think he was granted a redshirt last year? He played all of 31 minutes last year and didn't debut until the Northern IL game. I'm guessing his debut late in the season cost him a year of eligibility. Sure wish he was a redshirt freshmen.

Denny is a far better player than I ever expected, and only a sophomore...he's going to be part of changing this thing around for Coach Jans.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure he was ineligible for a medical redshirt. The rule was brought up here last year but it's a combination of not playing more than X games, and not playing later in the season than game Y. I don't remember what the numbers are exactly, but I think since the time he played was so late in the year it took away his ability to apply for a medical redshirt. (Of course had he not played at all he could have just plain redshirted)

I could be wrong, but I think once you've played in a LEAGUE. game, you lose the redshirt...at least football has something like that.

Here is the Hardship Waiver Rule. Denny burned his regular redshirt the first time he stepped on the court in a regular game. Medical reasons are under the Hardship Rule.

The Hardship Waiver – Not to be confused with the redshirt is the hardship waiver, which is commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as the medical redshirt. A “medical redshirt” does not exist.
On occasion, a student-athlete may have competed and used up a year of eligibility, but because of an incapacitating injury/illness, they may be granted a hardship waiver and receive an additional year of eligibility. In order for this to happen, the following criteria must be satisfied:
1) the injury/illness is a season-ending injury;
2) the injury/illness occurs prior to the completion of the first half of the season; and
3) the injury/illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than the greater of three contests/dates of competition or 30% of the team’s scheduled contests/dates of competition during the team’s traditional season. (Bylaw 14.2.4)
Along with contemporaneous medical documentation, this injury/illness information is provided to the conference office, where the decision on granting/denying the additional year of eligibility is made.

Denny did not have a season ending injury that occurred in the first half of the season so I think that is out. I wondered also about the women's BB team. According to my understanding Webb would qualify and so would Donovan but I think Seifker would have too many games for the 30% rule.

I'm worried Coach Jans might not be here for his own turn around. If the team continues to play well he could be gone in less than 2 months. A low tier Missouri Valley team would double his pay. Enjoy his success now!

Zach Denny is everything we were told by Louis Orr we were getting in Luke Kraus and a lot more! Denny defends much better, he rebounds way better, and he shoots light years better. That is the kind of performance that deserves and warrents the type of playing time Denny receives over what Kraus was given and did with it. And it's also an example of how much better we are now than we were as recent as last year or over the last five years. We may not be MAC Champions this year, but we're already a much, much better team and Denny is big part of that.

Thanks for the info. It's just that I seem to recall a certain BiG team that had a kid who played in some non- conf. Games, but was redshirted due to NOT playing any conf. Games. Can't recall specifics, but thought it made little sense at the time. Perhaps he did get injured.

If that rule knocks him out it makes no sense. His injury was season ending. Just not instantly.

We must not speak of these things and bask in the joy of having an "Urban Meyer" for our basketball program. However I do think of it at every game...he's that good.

ZD has phenomenal timing with regard to rebounding. I played in HS that that was about the only thing I could do. Couldn't shoot, dribble, etc. but for some reason I could time my rebound and seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Zach has that in spades.

It's amazing that you see Zach play and wonder if he could have done that wee, or if his injury affected his mobility. I'd like to believe it was the way the previous coach used him, but I've been saying bad things about Orr for at least 3 years.

I could give my theory on how a payer got playing time, but it's water under the bridge. I'm glad to see Holmes and Denny flourish under a real coach. So much of what Zach does is not in the box score, the kid seems to be everywhere the ball is and he forces a lot of tips and steals. It was fun to see him get his first double double. I was afraid he wasn't going to make it but he got #10 rebound. That and 1 more point (the missed free throw) and his season average would be 10.0 points per game.

Not bad for a kid this forum was writing off at the end of last season

Denny has been a really nice surprise this year, even to me with my home town bias He came from a rival league school. A league not known for basketball, although Franklin HS has a kid going to Duke next year.

Denny is starting to remind me more and more of Steve Kerr in his pre knee injury Arizona days. Kerr was always a true pg but they both have a great outside shot and nearly perfect at the line. Good fundamentals and a nose for the ball. We never got to see anything last year due to a nagging knee injury that just wasnt going to resolve on its own. I'm disappointed in how that situation was managed because we essentially lost a year with him.
