This team has hit a wall
No, the sky isn't falling, but BG certainly is in the MAC standings. And it's coming at a bad time with tournament seeding looming. For the first time this season, this team has hit a wall. I expected to hit one or two this season but we essentially bypassed them - until now. There was a loud and clear thud here at the Stroh on both of these games.
We started the week in first place all alone in the MAC with two games at home vs East teams below us in the standings. And Miami and Buffalo both waltzed into the Stroh and took it to us. And we looked bad in both games. It's the first time we've lost consecutive games all season, and it happened at a bad time as those fighting with us have won again and moved past us. Our outside shooting has been horrible the last couple games and it cost us dearly again today.
We now have to close out the season with 3 of the last 4 on the road with two stops against teams that just whipped us on our home floor. A bye to Cleveland looked almost certain before the week started. Now, we've really got our work cut out for us.

Re: This team has hit a wall
Good teams can take temporary downturns. This is part of the plight of man. We need to stay tough and play through this, and I believe we will. We're finding our bottom, and that's essential for a team to know who they are. We're still in good position, and I'm confident that the staff and team will find a way to break out of this.
I don't get too worried about MAC tourney seeding. The only purpose of playing in the MAC tourney is to win it, and we'll need clutch performances to beat multiple good teams no matter what our seed.

Regardless of how the season ends, this has been an incredibly successful season and I can't say I've ever seen the future of the program as bright as now. I expected a moment like this week all year partly because a) my experiences with Bowling Green basketball go back 10 years with all kinds of disappointments and letdowns and b) this is a squad playing well above their talent level and at some point no matter how well coached, the guys will wear out or hit their ceiling. I could not possibly be more excited about the future of BG basketball, and I'll in the end of the day look at this stretch of the first Jans season as a growing pain and a growing experience. This team will be great in the future, even with the best player graduating.

I wonder if Worrell would have helped. We are so thin at the 4 and 5.
Re: This team has hit a wall
I agree to a point on the seeding, but with our recent inability to simply even get to Cleveland and get out of the first round, BG simply getting to Cleveland whether it's with a bye or a first round win would be a huge success.BleedOrange wrote:I don't get too worried about MAC tourney seeding. I think that all the time. Still curious on that redshirt, but I trust Jans immensely so I'm sure there is good reason for it. We badly need him though, and from just the scrimmage the kid looked like he can play.Globetrotter wrote:I wonder if Worrell would have helped. We are so thin at the 4 and 5.
This season has been awesome but the last two games were reality checks at just how far we still have to come. Coach is doing a fantastic job and Holmes has carried this team on his back. The last two games Richaun was fantastic but we've gotten nothing from anybody else. Basically we were winning because we were getting scoring and production from Clarke and Henderson that they had never shown in years past. The last couple of games they've been struggling again, and we don't have anywhere else to turn.
It really sucks that we have 3-4 scholarship players that have no business ever stepping foot on a division 1 floor. We're going to be playing shorthanded for the next several years, but I'm very confident in this staff...they've been nothing short of fantastic. Still Mac coy IMO.

I'm often like " if only we had another athletic big" then I remember we do have one.
I agree in the bench. I'm excited about Andrews next year. I think Friday will be a stud as a stretch four. I'm worried about Malik. He's just 5-11 and doesn't have a lot of assists and hasn't shown to be a great shooter. I think tisdale has a future here there just are no minutes for him this year. I'm most interested in what happens to Gomez and Mayleben. Both would have to develop a ton to be contributors. We don't need 13 man rotations. But I'd like to have hope for improvements at each roster spot.

I hope you are right. There is so much fun to be had when the team is playing well and the gym is rocking.MarkL wrote:Regardless of how the season ends, this has been an incredibly successful season and I can't say I've ever seen the future of the program as bright as now. One guy I'd like to see step up for us is a Spencer Parker. He seems to have caught a case of "Auston Calhoun" out on the floor this year. Both guys had/have talent and athleticism, but on a scale of 1-10 on playing enthusiasm and intensity, they consistently ranked/rank at about a 3. Parker, like Calhoun often did, looks like he's just going through the motions out there. We've seen him go off like he did at Kent State, but I'd simply settle for being aware he's on the floor or that he played right now.

This is our most wins since 2008-2009 (19) and 2004-2005 (18) . Thats just 3 winning seasons in 11 years and in his first year will likely reach 20 wins.

19 points & 10 rebounds against OU.
It's easy to defend Parker after a night like that. But he averaged 11 points in the 5 games before that too. I have zero problem with the way Parker plays the game. Personally, people who emote on the on the court or field are overrated. Give me calm and in control each time.
Re: This team has hit a wall
I love Parker's game when he's not settling for 3 pointers. He's not a great outside shooter and he can bring so much more to the offense than that.AyZiggy97 wrote:BGSU33 wrote:One guy I'd like to see step up for us is a Spencer Parker. No problem with how he's been playing for me.

Good win last night. I like the toughness of this team alot. I believe we are playing to our capability, even with the rough week at home last week.BleedOrange wrote:Good teams can take temporary downturns. This is part of the plight of man. I noticed 6 of our 10 conference wins are against the bottom three teams in the MAC standings, with the wins at Kent and Central standing out as our best work so far. It will be interesting to see how the new starting lineup and bench will carry us the rest of the way. Can we elevate our play to match the top teams? Are we the team that beat Central in Mt. Pleasant, or the one that seemed overmatched against Miami and Buffalo?
