The most poignant story related to the reunion is the story about the struggles of former Falcon Mark Wells, who has lost basically everything to an illness, and even had to sell his gold medal to pay for medications.
I had not heard anything about this until I saw the CBS story, but maybe I just am too far removed from BG and it was in the local media.
Whatever the case, I do think it would be very appropriate for BGSU to get behind some type of fundraising effort to help Wells, who has another surgery coming up in early March. This is a guy who represented the university and the country with dignity, and despite not being a big "name" in US hockey at the time, played a crucial role in the US winning the gold.
One stat they related in the story was that no opposing team scored a goal against the US when Wells was on the ice. That is a pretty compelling statistic.
I would be more than willing to give to a charitable effort on behalf of Wells, if someone would get behind it with a credible name (so people are more willing to give).
Here's a story I found that explains what he's been through...
