Ohio D-II State Championship Controversy

Post by transfer2BGSU »

Defiance won the state title in D-II over Cleveland Central Catholic.

Evidently a CC player hung on the rim after a dunk and was issued a technical foul with less than a minute remaining. Defiance made both shots, the game went into OT and Defiance won in OT.

Looked like showboating to me and a good call.

Absolutely no question that it was a good call, but there are some officials that wouldn't have called it because of the possible controversy. I'm not sure it is a good rule, but it certainly was a GOOD call. =D>

I love the rule and I would love to see it called more often. Never understood the rationale for the change just because we have better (breakaway) rims now. It's fine if you're protecting yourself and other players by grasping the rim, but just grabbing it to add to the effect and/or showing up your opponent should still not be allowed in high school ball IMHO.

Luckily have never had to make that call, but I commend the official for doing it. No question that's showboating.

Just an opposite view. I was at the NCAA tourn. Games in CLE... A Notre Dame player drove the lane ( similar to this kid) ...the ND kid's legs were above the rim! So if this kid's was a tech. Then the ND kid should've been too. :-k

I agree. I don't see any reason why they need to permit the show boating. If you grasp the rim for any reason other than preventing landing on someone it should be a tech.
