As much as everyone likes Downey, Mr. Frack's money allows us to look for someone potentially bigger and better than Downey. Basically I want the head asst. of a top level mid major. I want Chris Jans that doesn't slap butts at Reverands.

We want the head asst. of a top level mid major? Sounds like we've got our guy in Downey!

I don't think BG qualifies as a top level mid major...

I was halfway joking, but the reality is that Downey is the head assistant of a mid major program that finished among the top half in one of the top mid major conferences in the country (at least it was this past year). BGSU was ranked in the "Mid Major Top 25" Poll for at least parts of the season. I'm not saying Downey is absolutely the answer but let's not just brush him aside because he only spent one year here at BGSU. He has a tremendous pedigree and is at least a finalist for another D1 job currently. So it seems there's something to it.

So far from what I've gathered . . .

Michael Huger, University of Miami, Jim Larranaga asst, former BG player
Mark Downey, Top Asst BGSU, 200 and some odd wins, just over a 100 losses and has won everywhere he's been.
Geno Ford, fired recently at Bradley, sustained success at Kent prior to BU. Well known commodiity in Ohio.
Marty Richter, Assistant Florida Gulf Coast. Experience in various levels including pro and Europe. Former Dakich assistant.

Power 5 assistants, mentioned along the way
Jeff Boals and Greg Paulus, Ohio State
Dwayne Stephens and Dane Fife, Michigan St.
Jeff Meyer, Bacari Alexander and Lavell Jordan, Michigan
Greg Gard and Lamont Paris, Wisconsin
Rob Moxley and Bobby Lutz, NC State

My personal nomination everytime this job comes open . . . (ok there's a few)
Scotty Davenport, Bellarmine (D2, Louisville) another Final Four this year

Does Downey ever smack butts at Tuxedo Junction? That's gonna have to be an interview question now.

As much as I would love to have Jay Larranaga, fromt the sounds of it, he may get his shot in the NBA this summer rather than the MAC

OptionQB wrote:I have a BIG issue with Boals and anyone from the OSU staff. Who have they made better?
1. Craft- defensive "specialist" who couldn't shoot coming out of HS and actually got worse as college went on despite shooting guru Chris Jent on staff.
2. DeShaun Thomas- came in as the unanimous #1 HS player and was drafted #58 or thereabout due to being played out of position and NOT developing.
3. Shannon Scott- came in much the same as Craft, never developed a jump shot.
4. Sam Thompson- Super freak athlete, didn't have a jumper four years ago and doesn't have one on the way to the Rookie combine.
5. Evan Turner- Became the #2 pick, granted, but was played out of position and can't get his own shot. Considered a bust bc his offensive game was NOT developed.

I could go on and on . . . Yes, they win but the B1G is also one of the most notoriously poorly officiated conferences and OSU is very much taken care of by Delaney and his crews in ALL sports.

As for Coach Downey, the incident(s) in question do NOT refect negatively upon any of the assistants or support staff. Obviously, a severe lapse in judgement was made and Coach Jans is dealing with the consequences of those decsions. I would be a HUGE fan of Coach Downey, Coach Ragland, Coach Barker and Anthony Stacey!
Your ire is misplaced. Boals is known most for his recruiting and his work with the guys inside. The overall lack of player development on this OSU the past several years all stems from huge misses on one recruiting class that had two McDonald's All Americans (Williams, Scott) and an unbelievable athlete out of Chicago (Thompson) that everyone thought would turn into the next Evan Turner. Instead, there was very little player development that happened. When Sullinger left early, the middle was a huge void that continued to be an issue, mostly because Williams never improved. At all.

I think Boals would be a great hire and would continue the momentum. He's a very outgoing and energetic guy as well, with the kind of personality that both players and fans love.

Having said that...there are undoubtedly other very good candidates available; it's going to be a matter of whether BG can attract any of them or not.

Lamont Paris is a very interesting option. From Findlay, went to College of Wooster, recruits Ohio as well as Boals. (Nigel Hayes, Vitto Brown)

Just wonder who was on Chris Kingston's " short list" last time...got to believe at least a few of those names might still be around. Also, given the situation, i wonder if the salary will need a boost. Obviously, the Buffalo job might be setting some new parameters. :-k

Very well said! Downey is the best choice to continue the success from this past season. He is an outstanding individual.
Let's hope we don't have to start over. Talons Up!
