Why waste Flacks money if we don't need to? We will be paying any coach far more than Orr. Flacks money made up the difference to get Jans. Our new coach will be paid in The 250k-325K range. Plenty of good coachs will work for that.JohnFloyd4Life wrote:Kampe has been at Oakland for 30 years now. Definitely not leaving for a lateral move.
We need to understand that Downey would be fine, but I think its a waste of the Frack money. You could have hired Downey without it, I think we need to focus on candidates that we couldn't have touched without Frack's money. Seems pretty logical.

Another thing is Downey's favor is that he hasn't interviewed for this job a time or two and spent a few hours talking to people. They've had a full year to observe him..to see what kind of a person he truly is.
I don't think there's any point to comparing Downey a year ago to jans or Downey to Jans now or Orr or anyone else at all. You aren't hiring "Greg Jans", you're hiring a basketball coach. That process needs to be a vacuum...driven by the responsibilities of the job and the qualifications of the candidates. Fan and media perception are meaningless. Ultimately, the results on the court will drive their opinion. Will anyone care if some vocal fans hate the hire now if we win the MAC in a year or two? I know I won't...

If Downey wins a Mac champ I won't care at all. I wouldn't care if they re hired Orr and he did it I would be delighted. I'm just giving my uneducated opinion.
Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
Under Downey we could still conceivably sell the Wichita State brand of basketball and model of how to build a program.
Everyone will have people say good things about them. I say open the process up and wait for someone to wow you. Downey, Boals, Alexander, Fife, Paris, Paulus, whomever. If they can wow Kingston they'll be able to wow us at a press conference and alleviate any concerns. You wonder who Kingston's second choice was after Jans last year and if there is still mutual interest.
I agree that this can't be about a single year or a single recruiting class. It has to be a big picture, long term hire. It will also be interesting to see what Buffalo will do with their opening. Was Hurley grooming someone (like Nate Oats) to slide over a chair or do they go outside the program?

He's being mentioned as a candidate for the Wisconsin-Green Bay job along with Dwayne Stephens (Michigan State) and Greg Gard (Wisconsin). Making the hire will be none other than former BG Associate Athletic Director Mary Ellen Gillespie.Flipper wrote:Bacari Alexander......I've said it before an I'll say it again
BG is a better job that pays more. The Toledo coach left Wisconsin-Green Bay to join the MAC.

I like the attitude. I'm not always a fan of hiring a new hc from within. I think it's the right thing to do to look at who you have in house and consider them, but it still seems like the better route is usually to go after someone outside and start all over. My own attitude about that is why i wasn't jumping at the thought right away. He's definitely growing on me and I would say he's my favorite of the names being thrown around so far.

Yikes. I thought the opposite. Kind of a childish chip on the shoulder type thing.
Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
Couple quick thoughts ....
- In the last decade+, I can think of twice in our major programs where we have hired an assistant from within ...
.... - Gregg Brandon. Started out great but then found the program stuck in neutral
.... - Jen Roos. I'd say we don't yet know exactly how good of a hire she is but we'll know in the coming seasons
- In the last decade+, we have twice hired an up and coming assistant from a different program ...
.... - Chris Jans. Great turnaround season followed by a resume generating event
.... - Chris Bergeron. Hard arguing that he's been anything but incredibly successful
I would be happy with hiring Downey. I'd also be happy with hiring an up and coming assistant. It is worth noting that we have had great successes (with the exception of Jans' personal mistake) with up and coming assistants in our major sports.

Sorry bros
I've jaut been reading thru this and realize I'm not making my point very well or kindly. I've been doing it mostly on my iPhone and iPad and I've been short and terse. Also frustrated with the fact that we have to replace the janser. I really do love all the opinions and what not. And ftr I've never spent a day being coached by Downey. He could be an up and coming stud who snuck through the cracks. I have no idea really. Just doesn't fit the superficial profile I'd like to see.

Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
Kingston was very clear when he hired Jans that one of his biggest requirements was whoever he picked must have experience and success as a head coach. If he stands by that again this time, that will eliminate some of the names being thrown around here. I wouldn't be at all upset if they hire Downey but i wouldn't be as excited as i was when they hired Jans either. I would have a wait and see attitude. I just don't know enough about him. History would suggest that the final choice ends up being someone none of us have mentioned yet. The speculation is always kind of fun, although maybe not as much this time given the reason we're in this situation.

The job still hasn't been posted on ncaamarket.org. I really wish we could know a little bit about what is actually going on.
My deal with the Downey thing is this; Downey would be a good hire given his track record. The only reason I'm in the anti-Downey camp is as I said earlier, the Frack money. It was a big deal when we hired Jans and very publicized that it wouldn't have happened without the Frack money. I know someone of Downey's stature could be hired without the Frack money, Downey is obviously a good option but I want to see that Frack money go as far as it possibly can. I want another Chris Jans, just one that only slaps butts in practices and games.

If this was truly a one time mistake .... what if we hired Jans back with a new, lower contract. Build in some additional safeguards into the contract and make him volunteer some time towards causes related to his actions. The university would make a donation to an alcohol abuse/sexual harassment cause. It would probably never happen and probably shouldn't, but it would be an interesting idea.
Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
Indeed. Enough things have happened to make mc99's above scenario increasingly plausible. The story being removed from bgsufalcons.com is consistent with this as well.JohnFloyd4Life wrote:The job still hasn't been posted on ncaamarket.org. A week into this and we don't know anything. We don't know if there was a backlash from the board, the higher ups in the administration, the heavy hitter donors or the team itself. We don't know if circumstances have changed or if new information has become available. We know next to nothing about the search, which is starting to make me question whether there is even a search going on.
Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
The UB candidate pool is remarkably similar to our own: Fife, Alexander, Boals, Paulus, etc. The only difference is a few lower level East Coast head coaches that make more geographic sense for them.
Comparing the jobs, we paid Jans more in 14-15 but Hurley supposedly had a 200k raise coming his way after the NCAA bid. They probably would return to their old pay scale unless they could get someone big. Fan support goes to Buffalo obviously, with their population base naturally giving them an edge. UB's new coach can only stay the same or do worse while there is still ample room for growth with the BG program.
This article paints an unflattering portrait of how their AD handled the situation:
