Spring game

Post by Class of 61 »

Anyone attending the Spring game? I'm curious to see how it's going. Also someone just posted that nicholas has transferred out. Would seem strange at this time,, considering that Matty J, while being named the starter, could still be a bit suscepable to injury. .. Not to mention that Nicholas hasn't played for what, nearly 3 yrs? Or maybe he's 3rd string and doesn't want that status.

Anyway, VERY curious to see how defense plays. :-k :-k

Just finished the spring game. I'll try to answer any questions that anyone might have if I can. It does look like Nicholas has left the program as he wasn't anywhere to be seen.

Travis Greene was held out of today's game. He was actually on the field in uniform standing behind the offense with Coach Babers. Roger Lewis was also held out of the game. Robbie Rhodes was on the sidelines too.

One player I looked for but didn't see dressed out was Nick Johnson. Anyone know his status?

As far as the game goes, you know how these things go, it's a mixed bag. If something good happened it means something bad happen on the flipside. The biggest positive was it didn't appear anyone was injured. Secondly it was awesome seeing Matt Johnson back out there again and he looked pretty sharp. One player who really jumped out at me today was running back Donovan Wilson, the transfer from Georgia Tech. He looks like a hell of a running back! Had several really impressive runs.

To me it really look like the offense had the upper hand on the defense today. Some of what was ran was situational sets but judging by what I saw the offense had the better game.

The biggest negative I saw today was actually Tyler Tate's kicking. Yes, it was windy, but not terrible and he missed all kinds of field goals and extra points. It was very unlike him. Bzbers did say afterwords that this was one of the few times they kicked outside this spring because of the weather but it was still very unlike Tate because he's a good kicker.

Another guy who made some nice plays early on was Austin Valdez, it looked like he was lined up at OLB.

There were a few more guys who looked really good on the field but unfortunately the numbers they were wearing didn't match up with anything on the roster. Most of these guys were playing on defense so it was unfortunate to not know who they were as we certainly have some questions on that side of the ball. So I can't tell you who they were based on that.

Also turned out to be a nice sunny day. We had a nice turnout and to be honest, the crowd wasn't much worse than we get on some of those night weekday games in the freezing cold November

Feel free to hit me with any questions and I'll do my best to try and answer.

this was just posted to the Bg website............

The Bowling Green State University held their annual spring football game, which marks the end of the spring practice period, on Saturday (April 11) at Doyt L. Perry Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio. The first-team offense earned a 36-34 victory over the second-team offense when Matt Johnson scored on a one-yard keeper on the final play of the game.

The Falcon defense held the offenses in check throughout much of the first quarter. Malik Brown recorded both of his sacks during the opening period and ultimately produced five tackles during the game.

The first-team offense finally broke through late in the first quarter, when Johnson threw a short pass to Ronnie Moore, who cut up the right sideline and ran for a 40-yard touchdown.

Tyler Tate drilled a 50-yard field goal during the final minute of the first frame which gave the first-team offense a 9-0 lead.

On the following possession, James Knapke got the second-team offense on the scoreboard by throwing a 19-yard touchdown strike over the middle to Teo Redding. That play cut the first team's advantage to 9-6, and they held that through halftime.

The teams focused on red zone offense and defense in the second half, and that allowed for much more scoring. During the final half of the game, Johnson threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, while Knapke added one more to his total.

The running game also shined during the second half, as Donovan Wilson and Patric Hannon combined for three scores, including a 20-yard touchdown run by Hannon which game the second-team offense a 34-23 lead.

After the Hannon run, Johnson threw a short touchdown pass to Moore to cut the first team's deficit to 34-30 before leading his offense to the game-winning score on the final play of the game.

Johnson finished with 17 completions in 23 attempts, 182 yards, four passing touchdowns and one rushing score. Knapke passed 27 times and completed 21 of those. He threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Neither quarterback was intercepted.

The game was highlighted by outstanding performances from several newcomers. Wilson carried the ball 14 times for 79 yards and caught two passes for 29 more yards. He scored one touchdown. Hannon's two touchdowns were part of four total carries for 39 yards. Matt Domer added six rushes for 22 yards. On the receiving end, Brandon Poncsak caught four passes for 44 yards and a touchdown. Tim Tupa, son of former NFL player Tom Topa, added five catches for 36 yards.

Several defenders also had outstanding efforts. Shannon Smith earned three sacks to go with the two Brown posted in the first quarter. Austin Valdez had four tackles for loss, and Brian Sanders created two tackles for loss, including a sack.

During the first half, the first-team offense and defense squared off against each other, while the second-teamers faced each other. When the teams returned for the second half, the first team on both sides of the ball matched up with the second team on the other side.

I saw Locke and his number matched up and yes, he looked to be at MLB. There was a #33 on defense (it was not Royster who did wear 33) who was lined up at end and was making plays off the edge. There was also a #11 and #5 on defense who are also running around looking pretty good. The roster only had Johnson at #11 and Moore at #5 pn the roster so I have no idea who they were. It also looks like Malik Brown was wearing #6 today. The mismatch numbers also had the announcer confused at time as he was announcing players who clearly weren't who it was (announced Gallon on a tackle on defense and he's a WR and wasn't playing and was on the sidelines in shorts, or said the name of a guy who is white and the guy was black or vice versa).

#33 might be Griff Saunders. Strange they would assign him the same number as Royster.

If #6 is Brown, then maybe Brian Sanders or Terrance Bush is #88 or maybe #5 mentioned above. There was also a #23 on D and he was large like a DL in the some pictures earlier.

Strange that they did not update the rosters before the game today. Did anyone in attendance keep one of the roster handouts? If so, can you clue us in as to who these #s belong to.

I printed one from the website so it must have differed from what was handed out. Who did they have wearing 33 and 5 (0n defense)?

Someone said he's recovery from shoulder surgery. He was there mostly standing with Roger Lewis during the game.
