Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
I don't think you can make the pivot of firing someone with cause... and thus breaking their contract ... and then rehiring them for a cheaper rate. It would be much more plausible for them to try to backtrack and say they changed their minds and Jans has been suspended pending completion of alcohol and gender issue awareness training (re-education camp) with owney serving as the interim until the suspension is completed. I would give that about a 1% chance of happening instead of the .001 percent chance that they try to bring him back at a lower rate.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
Fife and Downey are the only ones with previous HC experience.
To be perfectly honest I could be talked into anyone on the list.
Lets just get this going.

Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
I've made my feelings on Boals abundantly known. I will not continue to beat a dead horse.
Paulus being mentioned is nothing short of laughable and I'll leave it at that.
One of my buddies won a state title in HS and played small college but knows quite a few guys who are connected to coaches. He ran into Dane Fife who at the time was the HC at IPFW. My buddy said something to the effect of "when's DeShaun (Thomas) playing?" ... Fife said "who?" ... My buddy said "DeShaun Thomas" Fife says "I have no idea who that is" ... My buddy says "Number 1 player in the country from Ft Wayne" ... Fife was never going to be a player for him at IPFW but says "Oops, probably something I should know I guess"
Case closed, no thanks!
Outside of BG, my rooting interest lies in A2 and I'm not advocating for Bacari or Butler finalist Jordan.
Gard is mildly intriguing bc Wisky is so fun to watch and I love the system and intensity they play with. Make a turnover ... Sit down. I would worry about leaving a recruiting base built over 20 yrs.
My choice for the past week or so has been Downey. 155 wins as a head coach. Over 200 when you include JUCO experience. Hopefully the recruits stick and honestly we just need to complete a staff for recruiting purposes. This past weekend was a HUGE weekend for EYBL and AAU.

I'd also be satisfied with anyone on the list, but if we were just going to hire the next name assistant from the Big 10 why didn't that happen last year?
The whole point of hiring Jans was his experience building a high-level program outside of the major conference power structure. Recruiting is different. Travel is different. Player development is different. Roster management is different. Bobby Hurley played at Duke but his college coaching experience was at Wagner and Rhode Island. Akron has had success with Dambrot (who once had an assistant named Jeff Boals) and Kent has had success with Jim Christian, Geno Ford and Rob Senderoff, all grinders who understand the mid-major terrain and have had success operating within such environments.
Downey fits that bill and can clearly coach but I don't know about him as a recruiter at this level. Hurley's recently promoted assistant from Buffalo was the lead recruiter on all their top targets and has been described as a "bulldog" on the trail. That's what we're going to be up against and that's the type of coach we need.

To be fair, all the assistants from the Big 10 have experience at mid-majors as assistants: Boals at Akron and Marshall, Alexander at Western Michigan, Jordan at Butler, Gard at Milwaukee and Paulus at Navy. They all chose to advance their careers and you certainly can't hold that against them.
Gard runs the best system, although the Michigan system (spacing, shooting, etc.) worked pretty well the year before when they had better players. I appreciate Option's objections to Boals, but the guy has gotten recruits from the region and Ohio State has won a significant number of basketball games since he's been there. He also coached under two of the best mid-major coaches around in Keith Dambrot and Greg White. It would be a great fit for exactly what we need.
Paulus would be intriguing and fits the trend in college basketball. Fife first got hired in his 20's. Josh Pastner at Memphis got hired at 31 or 32. Highly, highly respected and successful people in basketball have given him high-responsibility jobs and speak glowingly of him. It would be a "catch a rising star" scenario a la Hurley and ideally he'd elevate the program and get us a tourney bid before the next behemoth swoops in to hire him away.

Paulus is not an actual option. All he has in name recognition. Being a Duke PG doesn't make you Bobby Hurley. If we are going to hire an OSU video coordinator as the head coach at BGSU, might as well go for Jake Diebler.
Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
I try to avoid OSU whenever possible, but he supposedly runs the offense and is given wide latitude by Matta during timeouts to organize plays. One of the episodes of "The Journey" on the Big 10 Network (largely propaganda, I'll concede) showed his role. He'll be a head coach somewhere in 1-3 years.
Downey keeps serving up red meat to the fan base via Twitter and I like it!

FWIW, Gillespie and Wisconsin-Green Bay ended up hiring Linc Darner last week (and thus not any of the people in play for the BG job). He's coming off a national championship at a Division II school in Florida.
We'll get around to hiring someone when Deadspin writes a snarky article making fun of us for not having a coach yet.

Not super excited about huger. I hope I change my mind. I love the visibility of Jan's and co on the twittersphere. I hope Downey stays.
Edit Talked to Grant and now I am super excited about Huger.

I liked him as a player, but he will have to prove himself as a coach. Looks to me like we went for availability, rather than the strongest coach, and I hope Michael turns out to be the best coach in BG history.
Re: Coaching Search List the 2015 edition . . .
I keep telling myself that Kingston has been successful with his other hires so this should be more exciting.
I would love for Downey to remain on staff but don't know how likely that is at this point. Other posters have stated that Stacey will be on the high school sideline next year but he would be an incredible hire as well.
We need a staff quickly and to plug some holes more quickly

6 year contract
CBS Sports
Miami assistant Michael Huger has reached an agreement on a six-year deal to become Bowling Green's next head coach, a source told CBSSports.com on Wednesday.
A formal announcement is expected Thursday.
Huger has spent the past eight years working for Jim Larranaga at both George Mason and Miami. This is the Bowling Green graduate's first job as a head coach. He's replacing Chris Jans, who was fired earlier this month after an incident at a local bar.
