Micheal Huger named Head Coach
This deserves it's own thread. Congrats Coach Huger. I look forward to following you. Please get on twitter and be transparent with recruiting. And Keep coach Downey if you can.

Re: Micheal Huger named Head Coach
I think this is a good, solid hire. To me, the BG connection is a positive. Huger may be able to speak a little more passionately to recruits about what BG has to offer and at the same time be able to see if a kid "fits" into the Falcon and northwest Ohio culture - a good thing. Nice job BG for wrapping this up. It couldn't have been very easy getting people to look hard at BG this year, all things considered.
This will turn into a very good hire if we are a top 4 finisher in the MAC consistently [ie bye to MAC tourney], and will become a great hire if Huger gets the program to the dance.
I will assume Huger can do all the things to get the team playing at a high level and have the coaching ability to make in-game adjustments [the good qualities Jans had]. It will come down to getting the talent into the program - something we didn't know if Jans could do either.
Remember, we only had 1 player with all-conference honors last year – which placed us among the bottom 4 rosters in the MAC in that category. Above all else, we need TALENT that can compete and win in the MAC.

Another great thing is he won't run at the first chance. Most likely. Jans didn't know bgsu from western Kentucky. Huger has a lifetime attachment to bgsu.

Anyone know how many other MAC coaches have coached their alma mater? I know Coles. Anyone else? Any that had long term success?Globetrotter wrote:Another great thing is he won't run at the first chance. Most likely. Jans didn't know bgsu from western Kentucky. I like the hire quite a bit. I don't know a ton about his coaching, but I have always loved coach Larranaga's style. I also love that we are bringing in a guy that was, at the least, a solid PG. He was also mentioned in some of those Miami fan threads as doing great work with their guards. We've had s**t guard play for the better part of the past 15 years, and it's the main factor to why we have not been competitive. Hopefully he knows guard play, can recruit some guards, and improve us drastically in that respect.
I love that he had a great rep as a guy in BG, and a great rep as a guy at Miami. He seems personable and he has a connection here. I've said for a LONG time that one of the biggest jobs for any BG coach is to be the face of the program and be a member of the community. This town/university doesn't support its programs just because...they need somebody out there trumpeting the cause. While it isn't part of the job description for most D1 coaching jobs, it most certainly is here. I hope that he's willing to do this.
I'm sure his ties to the university (and the reported recommendations from former stars) played a large role in why we hired him. My only fear is that he becomes another Paluch that gets the job and then just cannot coach. On that I'll just say I trust Kingston, and hopefully Huger becomes a great coach here. He's got his work cut out for him filling out a coaching staff and then finding some players.

I knw jack about any of this...I have no idea who applied for the job, who interviewed, how they answered those always important STAR questions...I'm going to assume that Kingston did his homework and that Huger was the best fit.
Agree with hammb 100% that the ability to develop a backcourt will be the crucial factor for him....give me a really good three guard rotation and a big or two who can rebound and set screens and I'm going to be a MAC contender every year.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Micheal Huger named Head Coach
So much yes. MAC basketball and college basketball in general is a guards game. Unless you have an absolutely dominating guy in the post you aren't going to win consistently without good guard play.Flipper wrote:I knw jack about any of this...I have no idea who applied for the job, who interviewed, how they answered those always important STAR questions...I'm going to assume that Kingston did his homework and that Huger was the best fit.

Re: Micheal Huger named Head Coach

Coach Huger posted this pic of his first team meeting today. Can we identify who is there? I think I see Dickerson and Parker, which is a good sign.
Re: Micheal Huger named Head Coach
Huger received a six-year contract paying $325,000 per year. The contract’s length and salary are the same as the contract given to Jans.
Re: Micheal Huger named Head Coach
Roll Along, coach. Despite what you might have heard that's still our motto and always will be. To paraphrase our head football coach, never settle. We've had enough of that. Being the next Gonzaga might be unreachable, but being the next George Mason is something you're familiar with and something perfectly appropriate to emulate.
Re: Micheal Huger named Head Coach
If they want to go then go. If the want to stay that's great, but he shouldn't have to beg. That imposes a power dynamic that's not healthy going forward. Jans continually said one of the keys to last year was the receptiveness of the players to their coaching. It's not an ideal time to recruit but we can certainly find people to fill the 13 scholarships.

The problem is if you lose them this year you are filling 4 year scholarships with guys that are the crumbs of whats left over. Them staying a year helps us in 2015 and 2016+mscarn wrote:If they want to go then go. If the want to stay that's great, but he shouldn't have to beg.
