Why...because Nate was a better player?
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Re: Huger possible assistants
I amend my statement. I thought my dad told me a story about them not allowing Nate to dunk because he would break people's hands. I called him and he said that was not something he actually told me. He did say that Nate played power forward on his freshman team because they had a center who eventually transferred and was an hon mention all american at New Mexico. I can't imagine how good that team must have been.Flipper wrote:Why...because Nate was a better player?
Re: Huger possible assistants
His name was Ira Harge and he was 6'10" or so and Nate was still a growing boy about 6'7" when he got to campus. Can you imagine if Harge would have stayed, we would have had THREE All-Americans on the team, Nates senior year!
.........not to mention that we beat the NCAA champions (Loyola) by 17 in Anderson Arena that year, without Harge.

That was when fr couldn't play on the varsity. My dad always says the freshman team would destroy the varsity team. Atleast that's what I remember but I'm not calling him this late to find out.factman wrote:His name was Ira Harge and he was 6'10" or so and Nate was still a growing boy about 6'7" when he got to campus. Since I didn't get to main campus 'til fall of '70, I missed seeing Nate play. I first began following BGSU BB in 1969 or so and at Firelands I remember Randy Santoro....a throwaway fact except that his granddaughter is Carly, coming to BGSU this year.BleedOrange wrote:Globetrotter wrote:Nate ThurmondBleedOrange wrote:Anthony Stacey is my all-time favorite Falcon. I'm beyond excited to see Huger and Stacey on our sidelines again!!!!
Nope. Not even Nate.
My parents came to main campus and I got them tix for the basketball game. Which one? The Miami game that was the biggest crowd in AA
What a fun time that wos!

YES YES YES. This would be good news.hammb wrote:Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, more embodies being a Falcon than Anthony freaking Stacey.
Simply awesome news! He should recruit well, he should have plenty of HS/AAU connections from his HS days, and his success at that level certainly would indicate the man can coach as well.
It will be so freaking awesome to see him on the sidelines for us!
From the Toledo Blade article:
"When asked about his assistant coaches, Huger was noncommittal on retaining those who worked under Jans."
Huger said - “I have ideas I can’t share, and I think people will be happy with the decisions I make.”
None of Jans’ former assistants were at the introductory conference.

It would be awesome to keep Downey as the head assistant. I don't know how realistic that is. He may feel slighted, but I'm sure it all depends on his options.

That's funny, Globe. I too grew up listening to my Dad rave on and on about Thurmond, Komives, and Darrow. Dad started buying season tickets in year 2 of Anderson Arena after having to watch games thru the glass doors on the north end of the building. I believe Nate came in with Wavey Junoir, 6-7 forward and star in his own right. I remember Dad saying many times that Nate's freshmen team would have destroyed varsity.Globetrotter wrote:That was when fr couldn't play on the varsity. I called him and he verified. Actually said they canceled the traditional freshmen and varsity game that year because the freshman team was so good.

In 1966, Freshman Lew Alcindor (n/k/a Kareem Abdul Jabbar) and his UCLA Freshman team beat the varsity by 15 points. Here's the thing, UCLA was the defending NCAA champions and Number #1 rated team in the country at the time. That team eventually never recovered finishing 18-8, one of the few UCLA teams of that time period not to be NCAA champs. Still that was a remarkable achievement for the Freshmen.Globetrotter wrote:I called him and he verified. Re: Huger possible assistants
Downey really seemed to be all-in on getting the head coaching job, but it would be great if he or any of the assistants remained. They have a lot to offer.
Other than Stacey, who else are contenders for the staff? Jans had 3 assistant coaches, a director of basketball operations, a video coordinator and an administrative assistant.

I am assuming we havent named our assistants because they are all coaching in the NBA playoffs.
Re: Huger possible assistants

Agreed, he had made great connections with the AAU coaches in Ohio this past year. He was well liked and was on track to get some 2016 Ohio kids we no longer have a shot at. Unfortunately, I think most people will be underwhelmed when they see the staff Coach Huger has put together. Having said that I hope he is successful, he has always been a class act.OSUFALCON wrote:Some how some way lets get Mark Downey back as an assitant.
