Where the fees go
I am certain this will be met with plenty of interesting responses around the U.

Re: Where the fees go
Absolutely Insane.
I love BG sports, and enjoy college athletics in general, but this is a major issue. $800+ per student per year goes directly to funding athletics. When a typical 4 year student graduates with 10s of thousands of dollars in debt we know right off the bat $3200 of that debt was to fund athletics?
This is something that absolutely will weigh into decision making whenever my kids (as of yet unborn) are looking at colleges. It just has to be.
And as a fan of athletics, they need to figure something out because this bubble is going to burst. We're funding these things on the back of debt when a lot of kids are struggling to to find careers after graduation that will allow them to reasonably pay back those loans. As a big fan of BG sports I'm thrilled that we've been able to increase our coaching salaries to competitive ranges in recent years, but in the future that spending MUST be done on the back of gifts such as Frack's, and less dependent on student fees.
If I were the AD my #1 goal would be finding a way of lessening the dependence on general fee funding.

Re: Where the fees go
It's been said time and time again. Athletics serves the University in a marketing/recruiting role, an avenue for a specific demographic of student to obtain a college education (athletes), and a popular opportunity for donors. Students are paying those fees, and in-turn they get a University that has Division 1 athletics, is on ESPN, and they get to attend these athletic events for FREE. Many other universities charge similar fees and the students still pay to attend the games. So, view the fees as more of a front-loaded ticket fee, because if you were to factor in season tickets for football, men's and women's basketball, hockey, volleyball, and whatever other sport we have that charges entry, I'm sure that price will get pretty darn close to, if not exceed, $800.

Re: Where the fees go
While I agree with some of what you say, what student or person goes to every single paid admission sporting event? It's not possible or worth 800 dollars.
Re: Where the fees go
It is all part of the university experience. I'm sure there are some athletes that don't attend music recitals or plays. I suppose the next thing is that science majors will have a higher tuition than a history major, because the history major doesn't require labs!
It all goes into ONE basket, for the college education.

It's like taxes. Have you looked at what your tax dollars pay for? If you don't have kids, then why do you have to pay taxes for the schools? If you don't drive, why do you have to pay taxes for the roads? If you've never had to call the cops or the fire department, then why should you need to pay taxes to cover those things?

Re: Where the fees go
In a perfect world the students pay for the labs, professors and instructors. The state pays for buildings, maintenance and custodial. The alums, businesses that sponsor and boosters pay for all the extras (rec centers, athletics, student unions and beautification of campus.
I really doubt this model is possible but I can imagine student costs would be cut in half at worst.

Re: Where the fees go
Agreed. I never needed to use the student health center, why did I have to pay for it? Should a person who never uses the rec have to pay for it? Some people don't play any rec sports, should they be charged that fee? If all you are doing is paying to eat at Steak Escape or buy things from the bookstore, should you be charged a fee for the union?footballguy51 wrote:It's like taxes. Re: Where the fees go
How do you weight it? Yearly, you pay a total of about $19,000 to send them to BG (with the sport fees) or about $21,000 to send them to Ohio State (without the sport fee). Or roughly $45-48,000 to send them to a school like Kenyan or Wittenberg.hammb wrote:Absolutely Insane.

Good points. As a student I never minded the fees because I like and went to the athletic events.footballguy51 wrote:It's like taxes. Have you looked at what your tax dollars pay for? Re: Where the fees go
It's like cable TV. My wife's best friend wouldn't know a football from a volleyball but she pays probably 15-20 bucks a month for a raft of ESPN's,Fox Sports, NBC sports and the B1G network. The system wil change when enough people view it as a problem and say "enough already" and force a change....
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Where the fees go
So the solution is for BG to switch to amazon or Netflix?
Re: Where the fees go
Is, "Stadium" the Doyt or the Stroh? When I was in school was when the fee was added to build the Stroh. Or is that something completely unrelated? If it's the Doyt, is it really getting over, $230,000 in funding from student fees?

Plus, as long as the operating budget for BG is lower than anyone else in the conference (which it is) there is no basis to infer profligate spending by the athletic department from these figures, and it sounds like the wiser faculty-types understand this. You can't attack someone for buying bulk soda at Wal-Mart while sipping organic iced green tea from Whole Foods.
