Re: Urban Comes Back for BGSU Football Reunion
mscarn... being able to understand that a coach is going to move on to a bigger job is in no way, shape or form at odds with wanting to play schools from the bigger conferences. Understanding that a coach is going to want more $$$ and a higher profile is logic...wanting to play larger schools is part of a natural expression of a competitive nature.
When you die is your tombstone going to read "We never should have played the Vols in 2015"?

Urban has been better for BG than any other coach ever was. Yes, Harold was great in his time as was Doyt. Both, incredible coaches for a small school. Urban's greatness is more impressive. Times are different as are players. However,Urban took a bunch of misfits that we had to endure and made them a very good team. He went on to National greatness not even imagined in little old BG. he was the best coach BG ever had and there is no argument. How could he not leave?
Re: Urban Comes Back for BGSU Football Reunion
It's not that he left, it's how he left that alot of people didn't like. That said, why are we still bringing it up 13 years later? I get it to an extent, but you would think by now we could move on and appreciate what he did while he was here that carried over after he left. I feel like one press conference overshadows the rest of his time here for some of you. Sometimes it seems like his name can't be mentioned on this board without it being brought up and that's unfortunate.

Yes, it is how he left. All of us were pissed. To still be 13 years later is a little silly to me. It is only football, you would think he killed the first born of thousands of alumni.able1 wrote:It's not that he left, it's how he left that alot of people didn't like. Urban cares about winning football games and his family. If he hurt your feelings, get over it because he's not losing sleep over it.

I'll argue. Urban Meyer is a very good coach. But never won a title here. He's no Doyt Perry, or Harold Anderson, or Curt Miller, for that matter.falcon83 wrote:Urban has been better for BG than any other coach ever was. Yes, Harold was great in his time as was Doyt. Re: Urban Comes Back for BGSU Football Reunion
Urban Meyer is the greatest coach in the history of college football...no one...I repeat... no one...has done what he has done. He left here and went out west to a mediocre regional program and made them a national player. He damn near won a national title at Utah. He went down to the SEC and won two national titles there. He came back to the midwest and won a national title here and he did the unthinkable...he beat a top notch SEC team with better athletes. OSU was stronger, quicker and faster than everyone else...that was something no one thought a Big 10 school would ever possible be able to say. Everywhere he's gone...regardless of region, he has won big. No one else has done that.
He's a better coach than anyone who has ever worked here. Perry, Miller and Anderson saw more success here...but I'm not going to be so narrow and parochial to suggest that winning a title here somehow trumps everything else. He's the man.. he laid the foundation for all the improvements in facilities that came after him. Did he win a title? No...did he make it alot easier for guys like Brandon, Clawson and Babers to win here? Yes.
Was I pissed whn he left...yes. Did I carry a grudge for a few years? Yes. It's been 13 years,....I'm over it.

That would put him in the same category as Moe Ankney.Schadenfreude wrote: I'll argue. Urban Meyer is a very good coach. But never won a title here. He's no Doyt Perry, or Harold Anderson, or Curt Miller, for that matter.
If anyone should be mad with Meyer, I would think it is Tyrone Willingham. He was head coach at Notre Dame. He gets fired because ND wants to hire Meyer, but they refuse to change their admissions criteria for football players. Meyer believes he cannot coach those types of players, so he jumps off the ND plane and jumps onto the UF plane and goes to Gainesville. He tells the UF players that they have a four year scholarship to play football and to quit worrying about their draft position.
One of my favorite stories -Janoris Jenkins, cornerback, eventually left Florida for North Alabama after Meyer’s successor, Will Muschamp, dismissed him from the team after marijuana arrests. Several months later, Jenkins spoke to The Orlando Sentinel about his dismissal.
“If Coach Meyer were still coaching, I’d still be playing for the Gators,” he was quoted as saying. “Coach Meyer knows what it takes to win.”

I thought his half-game suspension of the Spikes kid for punching an opponent in the groin was right up there with Frank Solich imposinig his six days of studying in the football office in lieu of suspending players for misconduct.

Moe Ankney...really? That's the comparison you want to make?
Ty Willingham's argument is with ND...they fired him, not Meyer.
If Meyer's post BGSU sucess isn't relevant to the discussion about him...why are any percieved ethical issues? And do you really want to hang Meyer for what someone else says he "would have done"? Does that really seem fair to you?

Re: Urban Comes Back for BGSU Football Reunion
I guess it depends on how "you" define coach. Urban may win more games, make lots more money, work at higher profile schools, and win more national championships, but he will never hold a candle to Doyt Perry as a COACH in my book.
I bet there are even a few guys in Hall of Fame that would agree with me! Maybe even the guys that got Urban the job here.

You can roll your eyes all you want to and whine about how hurt you were when he left while you're at it...but the fact remains, he's done something no one else has done. He's coached in three regions at four schools. We're the only stop where he didn't win a title or finish in the top 3. No coach has ever done that in a career and he's done it inside of 15 years. Quit your crying, dry your eyes, man up and accept reality...

Re: Urban Comes Back for BGSU Football Reunion
I don't think he is the greatest coach but he is on pace to be. 3 national championships and 2 other undefeated seasons since 2001.
Absolutely right he is no Miller, Anderson or Perry. He is better. Sorry. No disrespect to any of them but they are not on his level.
I personally don't care much for the man but I'm not going pretend he isn't the best or at the worst second best coach out there right now. He wins no matter where he is at. He churns out stud QBs like no other. Not many people would know who Josh Harris, Alex Smith or Tim Tebow is if he hadn't have coached them. Not surprised he has 3 QBs that could all be conference MVPs on the same roster.
Yeah he "only" went 17-6 in his 2 years here. But that was in his infancy of head coaching.

What would a reasonable expectation be in that situation? Almost anything other than a giant newspaper article saying he was staying and wouldn't leave until we won a championship. (Incidentally, he told Utah he was staying live on a College GameDay broadcast which has more of a media reach than the Sentinel and triggered a resentment with a shelf life longer than 13 years if you listen to their fans.)jpfalcon09 wrote:What did you expect Urban to say? I'm out of here, good luck with everything and I'll be sure to write? He was put in a tough spot because he knew he wanted to advance his career and wasn't going to jeopardize anything he had going on at BG. Be mindful, this was all before social media and the million insiders who typically end up reporting news well in advance of actual announcements being made. The man did what he had to do professionally and there's no shame in that. We should be happy that he at the very least participates in events like these and promotes the BG brand. He's a very large ambassador for the school whether you like him or not and the school doesn't have to pay for that kind of publicity.mscarn wrote:There's a difference in keeping things close to the vest and having a huge article published in the Sentinel-Tribune days before proclaiming your intentions to stay and finish the job (among many, many other things too numerous to mention). That was cold. As has been brought up multiple times over the past year, BG is indeed a unique and special community and deserved more from its head football coach.
Not surprisingly, the same thing happened to the Utah folks and our two fan bases combined can't match the emnity the Florida Gators have towards him. Drunk with his tonic, the OSU people think they're immune but he'll do the same thing to them and they'll join the club too. What's particularly upsetting is that he at least left (or will leave) the other places with rings while we got bupkis.
How exactly does he promote the BG brand? By telling reporters how outdated the facilities were when he was here? Buttering up the locals with stock praise during a biennial charity appearance where attendees swoon at the presence of the great King who has benevolently deigned to grace the village plebes with his presence through a night of rubber-chicken eating and listening to bad jokes about his QB situation?
