Hadn't heard that. Sad day for MAC hoops fans. We inert was a character and always entertaining, but, yes, he could coach, too.

Great coach...and greater guy. Had him for a couple basketball camps at BGSU when I was a kid and he was great with us.

Re: RIP John Weinert...
I have so many memories of sitting in the student section at Anderson Arena across from the BG bench and watching this coach in an ugly brown checked blazer do his thing. His teams of the late 70's and early-80's were some great teams to watch. Just too bad that they couldn't get over the hump and finally get us into the NCCA Tournament. In 1982, I thought we had finally made it. We won the MAC regular season and had OU on our home court in the MAC Tournament final. But it wasn't meant to be that day. I don't think I've ever gotten over that game. I am sure Coach Weinert would tell you the same thing. RIP coach.

Re: RIP John Weinert...
I used to hang around and listen to the postgame show and John came upstairs screaming at the referee monitor guy. It wasn't pleasant, but afterward he came to me and apologized for his behavior. Geeze, I agreed with him, but I thought it was a class act to come to a FAN and apologize.
Coach, ya blew the Mike Miday thing, but I still liked you and I'll miss you.

So many vivid memories of Coach Weinert and his teams from my youth. I still remember those post-game interviews on the radio. I've always missed him.

Re: RIP John Weinert...
My recollection is that coach Weinert was the instructor in my elective basketball class at Anderson Arena during my freshman year either fall of 84 or spring of 1985. Would this be correct? Either way, I recall meeting or interacting with him on campus and he seemed like a very good guy.
My buddies and I would get a chuckle about how Weinert finally gave 6’ 10” senior Freddie Bryant a chance late that ’84-‘85 season. Freddie was very slow and had terrible footwork and hands but somehow turned on a switch and played out of his azz for the last 6 or 7 games that year. I think I recall even Weinert shaking his head in disbelief, like “where’s this been your entire career”?

You know what is odd. Freddie Bryant's LinkedIn page shows him working in Audio/Visual in Orlando. He shows his Colorado Education in big bold type including the CU logo and then as an after thought in regular type "Attended Bowling Green State University. Here's the link.

I'm trying to remember, was Weinert the coach for the Miami debacle? The game where we lost like an 11 point lead in the last minute and a half?

Will one of his sport coats wind up in Mickey Cochrane's archives?
