2 more Vols out against BG
Re: 2 more Vols out against BG
We will be able to find some positives after this game - not sure they will be on the D side - but you NEVER know until the game is played. Go falcons.

Re: 2 more Vols out against BG
We know all about over-practicing. We had a solid 2007 team but the coaching staff was scared to hell of our bowl opponent, Tulsa. The Brandon coaching staff decided to have the guys practice themselves to death so come game time they a) were exhausted b) were mentally out of it and c) did not get to enjoy the bowl experience. The result was the team looked beat before the game started and never got on track. They were blown out of the stadium.
The Clawson coaching staff learned from the Brandon coaching staff mistakes and balanced practice intensity with fun for bowl games. The Clawson teams went 0-3 in bowl games but easily could have been 3-0 as all the games came down to the wire and we had a lead in the fourth quarter in all three of them. (And two of them had controversial calls not go our way in the final deciding minutes).

Re: 2 more Vols out against BG
Any feeling that the team has been practicing so had this early because of Oklahoma in Week 2? Does Butch Jones think that they won't have enough time after Week 1 to properly prepare for them? I'm really surprised at the number of injuries UT has had in camp and I think it speaks to being too intense, too early.shieldpacal wrote:Hi guys. It appears that some of you are picking up misinformation or incomplete information about the most recent batch of Tennessee football players who are out or injured. Von Pearson is not one of them to the best of my knowledge. Here is the latest news story on it from the Knoxville News-Sentinel, which is the local metropolitan newspaper that keeps the closest watch on the Tennessee football team:

Alton "Pig" Howard, the guy suspended for the BGSU game, is considered to be the best and most dangerous wide receiver on the team. Jason Croom was a greatly improved wide receiver that was expected to have a breakout year, but it appears the only thing he is going to break out of is the operating room at a local hospital. LaDarrell McNeil is our starting strong safety---another great player down. Vincent Perry is a freshman wide receiver that was having an excellent practice and showing flashes of brilliance. Like I said guys, practice them to death and ensure that an amputee's convention shows up to play the game---not good---really bad news here in Knoxville.

It's cool. I get it. Our D was poor, at best, last year. At times it was the worst I've ever seen. Ward is highly regarded as a D mind and I'm excited to see what he does. I will say at the scrimmage, the d flies around to the ball and hits. Young? absolutely. The effort will be there and we will improve as the season goes on. I wouldn't make any judgements about the D for the first 4 games...as long as it is a solid unit come November, we be in great shape with this offense.
One other thing...we have the best special teams in the MAC and one of the best units in the nation. Joe Davidson will be a BiG help with his punting and pinning teams back. That will help our D.

I believe improvements in our offense will also help the defense. We had a lot of very quick 3-outs last year on 'O'. So even when the 'D' got off the field they barely had time to catch their breath.Falconfreak90 wrote:FalconKid wrote:sorry man. Dont really mean it to be negative. Re: 2 more Vols out against BG
Absolutely! The WORST thing for a fast-paced, hurry-up offense is to go 3-&-out. It totally negates what you're trying to run and do to the defense. I remember in the opener last year when we got to see it for the first time vs WKU, our first couple series were 3-&-outs and we were unable to get a single first down and before we knew it WKU had us in a 21-0 hole. All opposing coaches want to see their opponent go 3-&-out, but when that opponent is running a hurry-up offense, it's especially crippling to it.Siborg wrote:I believe improvements in our offense will also help the defense. That's a very real possibility JP. I hope Coach Jones realizes that the best way in the world to lose a game is to overlook his next opponent and focus on the opponent for the following week. He also has a new Offensive Coordinator---and we fans do not know Jackson S+++t about this new guy. It kinda worries me that all these injuries are showing up on the Tennessee offensive side---and not on the defensive side. You guys have any clues as to what this might mean in the context of a new Offensive Coordinator?
Re: 2 more Vols out against BG
I don't know if I would openly describe Pig Howard as the best WR at Tennessee, but he is one of the most dynamic playmakers on the team. The guy is very capable of breaking a quick end-around or screen to the house before you even realize that one of your defenders got caught out of position. As a pure WR I put Von Pearson ahead of him. Losing a safety hurts more than anything else right now, but that's an area where we have a little depth and hopefully our crazy talented defensive line will continue to live up to their talent and keep the pressure off them.shieldpacal wrote:

Re: 2 more Vols out against BG
Could mean a different practice style on the offensive side. They may be practicing faster and more intensely than previously or may be using muscle groups and joints in a different way from the previous practice style. Just a thought ...shieldpacal wrote:jpfalcon09 wrote:Any feeling that the team has been practicing so had this early because of Oklahoma in Week 2?
