Tennessee Two-Deep
Tennessee Two-Deep
Game Notes for the Tennessee game are up. Volunteers starting running back is listed at 6'4" and 240 pounds. He's bigger or as big as all of our linebackers and a couple of defensive lineman. Sounds like the guy from Pitt we faced in the bowl game two years ago. We couldn't stop him and that was with the MAC's best defense that year.
If you are Butch Jones, don't you just line it up and pound us like Wisconsin did last year?

We shut down Michael Turner in 2003....that seems as relevant as the Pitt game right now.
I can't recall many... if any..games against a good P5 team where we or anyone in the MAC doesn't face the same issues physically. if that's what you want to focus on, writing game previews for those contests should be really easy.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Jalen requires quite a bit too take down, this is from last year at SC.

If we're gonna cherry pick stats, Brian Ward was the head of the only defense to stop Melvin Gordon last year too, with many of the same issues. None of us have seen these players take a snap against opposition this year so who knows what to expect, but I will say it's sad how quickly people are ready to throw in the towel on that side of the ball. I think this defense, with a lot to prove and added motivation will surprise many people.

Re: Tennessee Two-Deep
I agree. I think we were severely hampered last year by having a defensive coordinator who had no business being a defensive coordinator. Doesn't matter how much talent you have on defense if you can't ever put them in the right place. Not saying we are going be a shutdown defense but we're not going to give up 50 points every week like some around here imagine.jpfalcon09 wrote:If we're gonna cherry pick stats, Brian Ward was the head of the only defense to stop Melvin Gordon last year too, with many of the same issues. Re: Tennessee Two-Deep
If we're going to pull out comparisons I'll throw out the 2009 game at Mizzou which to me is the most comparable in this scenario. That day, former BG grad assistant, Gary Pinkel's Mizzou gameplan was to use his quarterback Blaine Gabbert and impliment a spread style attack. For 3-plus-ish quarters the BG team was up to snuff leading 20-6 in the 3rd quarter at which point Pinkel packed it in and grounded and pounded and their big back lead them to the 27-20 victory.
From what I can tell it appears Butch Jones will be looking to run a spread against us as well. From my standpoint that would seem to play in to our hand.

Yep like I have said previously, I don't think they will go all out run until they have to. That said they may find all kinds of success spreading us out but I think we will better than many expect.

This times 1000. We didn't have a defensive coordinator last year. We had a wide receivers coach masquerading as a defensive coordinator and the results were horrendous. Having a legit coordinator with a strong track record will make us a better defense, even with less experience. The talent is there. The coordinator is there. The drive is there. Maybe I'm overly optimistic ... but I'm feeling fine about our defense.kdog27 wrote:I think we were severely hampered last year by having a defensive coordinator who had no business being a defensive coordinator. And as JP pointed out, keep in mind ... Brian Ward pretty well shut down Wisconsin last year. The same Wisconsin team that burned us for record after record. And Ward did it with half the talent. Now he has more talent. I know I said it before but I get a real Mike Elko feeling from Brian Ward. And that is a very, very good thing.

Like I said guys. The Tennessee OL is still a really big question mark this year. Anything could happen. So, I would not prematurely throw in any towels. We just gotta line them up and see what happens.

Zach Azzanni - UT's Wide Receivers / Pass Game Coord....
Spent 2001-06 at Bowling Green, where he began as a graduate assistant for the offense. He was hired full-time as the wide receivers coach before the 2003 season. His Bowling Green receivers broke nearly every school receiving record. In 2004, he coached a group that produced four receivers with 1,000 yards receiving, and was ranked third-best in the nation by Athlon Sports
Five of his receivers at Bowling Green signed professional contracts.

Re: Tennessee Two-Deep
The problem with Jalen Hurd---as I see it personally---is that he is not fast with the ball on the hand off from the QB. Unlike past Tennessee teams where the QB hands off in a semi-crouched position to a semi-crouched running back on the move, Dobbs takes the snap in a fully standing position and "hands the ball downward" into the hands of Hurd. It is NEVER what a 1960s football coach would have called a "clean ball exchange." Then Hurd kind of stutter steps a little looking for a hole to run through---a hole that is not always there. The unclean ball exchange and looking for the hole looks very awkward to me every time they do it. I often comment to my son that it looks like something dangerous and kinda first grade in K-12. You'll probably see what I am talking about on Saturday if you look closely.
Look at the clean, classic ball exchange between Peyton Manning and Jamal Lewis in the first few seconds of this video clip. The idea is for the running back to get a quick, clean hand off and he then hits the defensive line going fast like a human bowling ball fired out of a gun. What Dobbs and Hurd do is usually nothing like this:

Throw me in here as well. Coach Ward knows his stuff and we'll be ready. We are young on D but we fly to the ball and don't stop until the whistle, at least that is what I saw at the scrimmage on 8/22. There will be mistakes, no question. But I am jacked to see how the D responds to all the talk about how poor they might be. Last year was last year. BEAT TN!kdog27 wrote:I agree. It's not easy being a defensive coordinator with this type of offense. Your defense is going to be on the field, A LOT. If there are roughly 15 possessions a game, the goal should be to get 10 stops, assuming you limit them to a few field goals. That would mean you are giving up 24-31 points a game. I would be ecstatic those results this year. New coordinator or not, the defense lost a ton of talent from last years team, that's not easy to replace.

I'm coming around to the idea that this might be true. BGSU has a couple of former defensive players in the NFL right now, right?MarkL wrote:This times 1000. Let's hope coaching can fix this.
