Time to Learn Rocky Top

Post by shieldpacal »

The song "Rocky Top," now a classic bluegrass song, was written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant in 1967. Felice was a native of Wisconsin, and Boudleaux was a native of Georgia. However, the song was written while they were staying at a motel in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The music and lyrics are here:

I have to admit, I think Rocky Top is one of the best ones in college. I like hearing it when Tennessee plays, I just hope I barely hear it this Saturday.

Gotta agree with '33 here. Used to schedule Tennessee every year on NCAA football back in the day just because I loved hearing that song.

Outside of Ay-Ziggy it's my favorite fight song in college sports.

+1

Rocky Top is part of what makes college sports so awesome, love hearing it played (hopefully not much on Saturday).

Last year prior to my trip to Knoxville for the Utah State game I wanted to fit in, so I looked up the lyrics. Loved the subtle reference to killing the people looking for the still lol

Believe it or not, back in the late '70s "Rocky Top" was a staple on the juke-box at Howard's. You couldn't go in there on a Thursday or Friday without hearing it.

Fun fact: Rocky Top is not actually the official fight song of UT. It is actually called "Down the Field."

Same kind of thing at BG, the fight song is Forward Falcons, but Ay Ziggy Zoomba is far more popular.

Well, that line in the song can actually be taken two ways. The men looking for the moonshine still could have been bumped off Internal Revenue Service agents. Then again, it may just be two guys looking for a good drink of hard liquor---and the moonshine is so good that they wanted to stay with it and never come down again.

Something in my head keeps going over and over again:

"Ay , Ziggy Zoomba, do solemnly swear...
