ESPN College Extra

Received info about this earlier in the week...ESPN has ditched GamePlan/Full Court for ESPN College Extra on U-Verse, DirecTV, Brighthouse, TWC and Cox.

Select college games each week which would normally be shown on ESPN3 only will now have a TV broadcast channel dedicated to airing the game. For DTV folks, the channels will be available as part of The Sports Package.

This is a win for many mid-major fans, especially the MAC as it should provide us more access to football and basketball games actually on TV instead of being streamed online only.

I wonder how this effects Sling TV. They offered gameplan as part of their package.

I cut the cord. Someone will have to fill us in on how this works. I'm assuming once they get rolling this will be an every day thing? If memory serves, Goalline was Saturday only and FullCourt was Wednesday / Saturday.

As far as I know, nothing will change for Sling TV. ESPN dropping GamePlan and Full Court simply eliminates the low-def broadcasts that were provided on those broadcasts. From what I've heard, Sling will still include ESPN3 and have access to all games.

I cut the cord....I think sling offers the SEC as part of the extended sports package. More games on "real TV" and less on ESPN 3 or whatever they were calling it this week isn't good. Streaming gives you the widest distribution possible and it's the easiest way (for me) to keep things organized. Go online... find the list of games and hook the computer up to your TV. Or buy one of these and just treat your TV as a dedicated monitor.

Games shown on College Extra will still be available on ESPN3. I simply believe ESPN is trying to up the quality of their broadcasts for these select games and pass that along to the customer for little additional cost. The Sports Package on DTV for example is $13.99 and won't be increasing with this addition...better than paying the separate fee for GamePlan.

This seems to be good news. I am a Direct TV subscriber with the Sports Package. I have bought individual games on ESPN GamePlan in the past, and I've watched on ESPN3 on my laptop. Using the computer to watch can get frustrating at times with the feed freezing up, but I am experiencing less of this as the technology advances.

I am also a NFL Ticket subscriber....you should see my monthly bill...and I just saw that CBS is streaming games for the first time this season.

It's a whole new world for TV and video.

ESPN needs to do something. Their model is hemorrhaging money. They paid out the rear for exclusivity on all these sports but they are losing revenue right and left from cord cutters. The ESPN3 model that is tied to isp subscriptions is a tie to this revenue stream but far less than they are used to.

They have paid so much for the content that they cannot make a profit on a pay for content online model either.

They have gotten so fat off cable subscription revenue they are going to be hurting. I look for them to start selling the rights to these games off to other networks at some point. Their business model is obsolete...and I fear that it will be the consumers that will suffer as less of the games will end up being available...
