That's vert surprising to me. I saw him playing there vs Tennessee but he very much looks and plays the part of an interior guy. We really seem to be reaching and trying to sort out our DE's. Damn I wish Thomas wouldn't have gotten into the situation that had him get dismissed. Other things of note, Valdez has been moved back inside to #1 MLB and Banks, who was a co-#1 last week, isn't even on the two-deep right now. True frosh Harris is now a #2 OLB.
Not surprised by moving Royster to end. He is clearly one of the top 4 linemen this team has. Need to get him on the field somehow.
I'm not disagreeing with Royster being one of our better DL - he is. The surprise comes from putting a bowling-ball kind of a DT at DE. We were exploited last week off the edges and were hurt much, much more than we were between the tackles and clearly lack speed outside on the edges. At 5-10 & 260 lbs, I'm guessing this isn't going to help solve that. But, our coaches certainly know much better than we do, but last week nearly all of those 400 rushing yards allowed happened on runs outside the tackles.
Royster at DE is a curious decision. As you mention, he lacks the speed to both be an effective pass rusher and help on perimeter containment for the run game. Perhaps Brian Ward feels that having the most size up front against P5 teams is the best solution regardless of where they're placed.

This was my feeling towards it. On rush downs, I expect to see him at end, passing situations I think we see Baird and or Brown. Baird just doesn't get enough push, his forte is rushing the passer.

GREAT news! But if either of them are injured, I hope we show our depth. We want to win this game but we don't want to win at the expense of our star players. This seems to me a great opportunity to showcase our new young backs and also give the rest of the conference something to think about when trying to stuff our run game.
