Former Falcons in NFL Europe...

Post by Falconfreak90 »

Courtesy of our friend, Huskie Jon....

Look for these BGSU alumni in the NFL Europe this year:

Ryan Wingrove - Cologne Centurians

Janssen Patton - Frankfurt Galaxy

Robert Redd - Berlin Thunder

Gives me a reason to watch NFL Europe.

Excellent! Let's hope this translates into some chances back in the states!

Anyone know how popular NFL Europe is over there? Just curious.

I think it depends on the team. Some teams have absolutely raging fans and sell out every game, others struggle. I know Frankfort does well. Brother of a friend plays for them.

Now correct me if I am wrong, but aren't all the players in NFL-E associated with some NFL team over hear? I have not watched much of it, but I do remember seeing different NFL team logo's on their jerseys during games. If that is so, who are are guys over there with?

Check this guys site out:

Looks like the Galaxy averaged 26K last year, however overall attendance has fallen every year since the 2001 season.

I am not sure if every player is spoken for. Most are, but unfortunately most become trade bait. Not all the time though. You get all mixes of players: High draft picks that got injured using it for rehab and to allow their NFL team assess them before the next draft, players that most in the industry think the game has passed them by (Akili Smith), and washed up old timers trying to get one more paycheck (rare).

I have seen players be traded for draft picks, show up in new camp and be cut, then picked up by another team that is ready to send them to Europe again.

Did Pittsburgh assign Patton? I would think they must have.

Here is how it works. The league is a league of its own. It stands by itself. However NFL teams can allocate a certain number of players and I beleive have to allocate 3. Those players are put into a draft and sent out to the teams. Many of the starters are from NFL teams. Most of the players are not. In fact many players start in front of allocated NFL players and are FA's. This usually leads to a camp invite. It would have been great to see Josh go over and play for a summer. He needs some snaps in a different style of offense. i ama Bengals fan and we sent our 7th round pick (QB-Casey Bramlet)over to get some snaps. You usually send players who you would love to see get snaps, but if they got hurt it would not be a big deal either. If you were on a team last year and are going back this year either as a FA or an allocated player you remain on the team you were with.

I am not certain if our 3 guys are on teams but being sent to Europe is a direct conduit to an NFL Camp.

Players who are allocated to NFL Europe get exemptions on cut down days. Meaning that if you send 6 players they can all make it past your first round of cuts without forcing you to drop anybody. THis is a big deal because it allows the team to give them longer looks by not losing anyone to hold on to them. I am not certain if this is true of NFLE FA's.

Also each team must have a certain number of players and or starters (not sure if its starters) from a country outside the US. This is a direct attempt to broaden the NFLs appeal.

I think it would have helped Josh, too, at least to show that he's putting time into his game, but taking care of that little future Falcon that's coming around was more important this offseason, the way it should be.

And Redd is likely out there assigned by the Eagles, though I was looking for him on the Colorado arena league game last week, in case he had an "out" in that Philly contract.

And speaking of Philly and the AFL, I believe they're the national game again this week, with Derek Schorejs handling the kicking.

They might as well call it NFL Germany now.

Frankfurt Galaxy
Hamburg Sea Devils
Rhein Fire
Cologne Centurions
Berlin Thunder
Amsterdam Admirals

Because throughout the years I think the German teams were the only ones to get consistent fan support.

I think the Cologne team replaced the Barcelona team.

Hamburg replaces the Claymores starting this spring.
