Western Game Moved to Huntington Center

Post by The4thHansonBro »

I just noticed that the Western game on December 30th is now at 5pm and at the Huntington Center. I thought is was originally scheduled at the Ice Arena at 6.

Maybe it'll be a doubleheader - Walleye play Elmira at 7:15

This crap was good when we were struggling with attendance and for that fact to get wins. When you have a quality team and a quality product to put on the ice you don't need these gimmicky marketing ploys to gain interest in the program.

STUPID............. STUPID........................... STUPID............................

You can give me all the reasons it's good I'm not convinced. You're hoping to build what........... a bigger fan base from Toledo, get fans exposed to a bigger venue, have the players play in a minor league rink, whatever your reason I don't get it. Attendance won't be any bigger then it would be at the Ice Arena. They did this several years back with Michigan. Attendance was nothing to write home about. Plus, all your local fans are driving 30 minutes and potentially paying more for parking (that could have been free if you have a pass in BG). As a program gets better you should have more leverage and have more HOME games not fewer.

Attendance is going to be abysmal either way... I don't think it really matters.

On Dec. 30? Students are gone. Why not play it in Toledo? Try it and see how it goes.

two games for one, no complaints from me.

the real mistake was the original scheduling on a Wed. night with the students gone. that's a freeking disaster any way you look at it. the double-header is a creative way to try to fix that screw-up.
and I get to see a Walleye game.

But it's the Huntington Center. Quite possibly the most uncomfortable arena I've ever set foot in.

I'll grant that maybe there was some flexibility here as this is a nonconference game. But, overall, it's unrealistic for Bowling Green to try to schedule all sporting events for when the students are not on break. When these games happen, I like the fact that the university is exploring creative solutions. I like when they tried playing a football game in Columbus, for example.

Also lets not forget with it being a nonconference game, it takes two to tango as the saying goes. The dates have to work for the opponent as well and there has to be comprise. If a Wednesday night during winter break is what worked best for the two teams that so be it

We don't have any off-weeks in the second half of the season and share no free weekends during the first half with WMU. It would have to been played during the week. As far as playing the game in Toledo I don't know who's call it was but it had to make financial sense to do it. Even if you only draw 1,000 in the Ice Arena you're making money on concessions and parking in addition to tickets. You lose those first two revenue streams playing at a neutral site.

The Walleye organization wanted BGSU to be included within their Winterfest celebration again this year, they invited the Falcons to play the game at the Huntington Center and they agreed. I don't really see the harm in this as the game should draw decent interest as people will be downtown and some Walleye fans will take advantage of the 2-for-1 deal they're offering.

When I spoke to Chris Kingston last year at the outdoor game, he said that he wants BG to get increased visibility athletically within the Toledo metro area. It's a goal for him that we compete for people's dollars as UT does not have a Division 1 hockey program. I think it's a smart idea to take advantage of this as it'll likely bring out some people who have never been to a BG hockey game before and it's an opportunity to generate a wider area for new fans and sources of revenue.

I have no problem with it, particularly if it's monetarily beneficial to the program. There are no logistics to work out for the university with finding staff to run the equipment at the ice arena, handle parking, security, food, beer, etc., most of whom are students. I have no idea what cut we get from the proceeds but it is likely more profitable than having it at the ice arena when there are only a fraction of their workers in town because the students are on break.

I wondered how long it would take before someone complained about this, since anything new or different MUST be complained about. The only real issue I see with it is the start time. 5pm start will be tough for a lot of people to get to, But I understand there's only so much they can do about this.

Other than that, why not? Attendance for a weekday game in BG with no students wouldn't be great. Maybe pull in a few walleye fans that will start coming down to BG, and we get to watch the walleye for free.
