For any of you that saw any of those games what do think was special if anything that those teams did to do in a team like Oklahoma last year? I'm sure the Coach Brandon and Co. have got to be getting bloodshot eyes studing the video of those games to find out what will work against them. Do any of you guys have thoughts on this?

GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROCK THE SOONERS!!!!!!!!
I think there are plenty of "lessons" to be learned, but you have to have the horses to make those plans work.
-Both LSU and K-State ran the ball right at the speed of OU . . . Watch the tapes, you don't see a lot of the pretty stuff the Miamis and Florida States and Floridas run . . . You see a lot of smash-mouth, in your face football. Do we have the O-line to handle that?
-LSU and K-State blitzed Jason White frequently and from everywhere in the stadium. Mixing coverages, but placing enough athletes on the field to run with the Oklahoma receivers allows that to happen. When playing a team with as much speed as OU has, your best pass defense does not lie in your cornerbacks, but moreso on how much pressure the D-Line and LBs can apply.
-Both teams forced OU into long yardage situations . . . You have to stop OU on first and second down if you're going to be successful. White isn't particularly mobile (anymore) and doesn't have a great arm, a la Big Ben, but he is very accurate and their spread involves getting the ball to receivers early and letting 9, 81, 29, 38 and 20 make the plays while White gets the credit. Similar to the UT offense with Gradowski.
-OU is replacing a lot of guys in the secondary particularly. It's nice when you have national top 5 recruiting classes to do that with, but at some point, these guys have to make plays. I really liked the idea of getting to the line and allowing Omar to look at the defense early and audible from there. It's very similar to FSU, Florida, etc . . . but it keeps the young OU guys on the field and minimizes subs . . . It also allows us to borrow from Bruce Coslet in the old SI commercials and "Milk it, Milk it, Milk it" . . .
-The game comes down to how well we can cover H, Z, Z, WR, FL, SE, FB, whatever you want to call them . . . If we defend well with pressure up front and tackle once the play is made, I think we can score. If we tackle like the Miami games then the A & M score of a year ago is a likely result.
-Watch Urban and the boys tonight. The have a very similar set-up to OU. A kid that can run, but has a better arm, a pretty stocky RB and of course the spread. The difference is . . . Urban doesn't have the athletes on defense that OU has or in the receivers, but they're good enough to roll on A & M tonight. Utah 40 A & M 21
They blitzed the crap outta our offensive line. They got to Jason White. They handcuffed Mark Clayton. They made us over pursue on defense. They kicked away from Antonio Perkins.
The KSU game - KSU just played the game of their lives against us. We've always had problems with mobile quarterbacks and good RBs behind them.
The LSU game - They were simply as good as/better than us. We made stupid offensive playcalling decisions late and ended up losing by only a touchdown (a dropped pass in the endzone).
White also broke a bone is his wrist against KSU and broke a bone in his foot on the first play against LSU. That didn't help his mobility.

White will be more mobile this year. Not super-mobile, but mobile-enough. He won't have any braces on his knees this year and will be two years removed from his most recent ACL tear.
We only replace two starters in the secondary. Strait & Everage. Strait was all-world, but Eric Bassey(former starter) and Chijioke Onyenegecha(JUCO AA) will replace him. The loss of Everage is our gain. He was a human missle last year, but missed too many tackles to even count. Brodney Pool is his replacement and played a lot last year. Pool will make some lists at the end of the year and snag a lot of balls.
The weakness of our defense will probably be our DTs. We have two guys who are great, Dvoracek & McGruder, but we really don't have anyone behind them.
Your not in the same league as those teams. You have to have the personnel to do what they did. Everyone would LIKE to repeat what they did, but few if any will be able to. You don't think our coaches are smart enough to make the necessary adjustments? Our O line will be improved, we will have a better running game to counter blitzes, new blocking schemes will be used, and the TEs will be used a lot more. Don't get your hopes up, just see it as a learning experience for your team.
