Babers to Maryland?

Post by gmartin »

Lots of tweets over the past 24 hours that Babers next step will be Maryland. Grrrr  :axe:

I'm really opposed to rumors and changes after the season and before the bowl games. Now we may have these rumors to deal with for over half of a season!!

That would be interesting considering Maryland comes to the Doyt next season. Maryland would honestly be a good fit for him as they have the resources to make the football program relevant again.

They should hire Matt Campbell...

Actually the fans on their message boards want Matt Campbell. Then they brought up Beckman from Toledo to Big 10 Illinois and then the talk has subsides a little

Babers to USC.....Babers to Illinois....Babers to Purdue....Babers to the Browns....Babers to the Globetrotters.

Maryland comes to BG in 2017.

Is there a tougher gig than Maryland? Franklin will have Penn State humming in a few years, Dantonio has turned MSU into a power, Harbaugh has resurrected Michigan overnight, and Meyer has the defending champs and top 5 recruiting classes lined up for years. Go get 'em! Under Armour better back a Brinks truck up to whoever they target.

Rutgers? When it opens, I mean. As you mentioned, Maryland might at least have some UnderArmour money to throw at their coach. Rutgers is a total train wreck in many areas, from the AD down. I don't think they will even trust her to make the hire when the time comes (that is, if she's still employed there). I'd take Maryland over Rutgers right now if I were applying for head-coaching jobs, but either one would have to give me a LOT of $$$$$$$.

I'll believe it when I see it. The Big Ten has an up-tempo spread offense in Indiana and they just hung all of 7 points on a Penn State defense that got lit up by Temple. Indiana and all their offensive talent and their offensive system put half half the points that Buffalo did on a decent Penn State defense.
And this one game is a microcosm - Indiana so often has basically no success against the better conference opponents. They occasionally do well against a big team, like hanging with Ohio State or Michigan, but more often than not the offense is ineffective where it should be a game changer.
We will not have Babers forever. I think we'll have him for at least three years. When he leaves I don't think it will be for the Big Ten. Not because he is not deserving but because Big Ten ADs will be less-than-convinced. When he leaves it will probably be for the Big 12, though I could see him filling a couple of Pac 12 positions.
And I think Matt Campbell takes the Maryland job. I do believe he is gone the second their regular season is over.

Babers to South Carolina.....

Babers went on the rant last year about signing a 10 year contract or something. I have no idea if he's the kind of guy who would stick around for awhile, hs told EIU he would. I wouldn't blame him if he bolted. People scratch their heads about Clawson taking the Wake job.

The flip side of that is Pete Lembo who waited and waited for the perfect job. And now looks like he missed his window and probably cost himself 8-10 million dollars.

The Illinois, Maryland, Rutgers, & USC (Both of them) all open 6 weeks through the season.

Purdue likely to come open. Georgia possibly to open. Gonna be a wild off season.

I hope that he is smart enough to not take a Power 5 gig just for the sake of having one. He learned this year and last that he can beat the likes of Purdue, Maryland, and Indiana while at BG. Of the possible openings (that I can think of right now) at the end of the season I think I would rank as:

USC
Texas
Georgia
South Carolina
Maryland
Illinois/Purdue/Rutgers

Obviously there could be some where some good coaches at good Power 5 schools "upgrade" to "better" programs or even the NFL and some of these wouldnt even be a possibility, but it could open up another gig that would potentially be better than those bottom B1G schools. I would think Dino would thrive in the Pac 12, and I think we can certainly consider him gone if Briles goes somewhere else for whatever reason, assuming Baylor would even be interested in Babers.

Then you also have to wonder if programs would want more than 2 years as a FBS head coach, especially coming into a situation where the team was coming off of a MAC title, with some strong returning pieces.

It's a fun yet sometimes frustrating situation to be in when you have to worry about your head coach leaving because of success, but we can enjoy it while he is here.

With this many openings this early into the season, our only hope at keeping Babers must be to point out that he's winning all of these games with Clawson's players! Don't hire Dino, hire Clawson! He's coming off an epic 3-0 win over BC!

In all seriousness, you figure there are a few names hotter than our coaches. Assuming the coaching carousel takes them first.

If BG wins the East, there's no doubt that Dino will get numerous offers from other programs, there's simply going to be too many P5 schools looking to fill vacancies. There's a high likelihood that both Toledo and BG will be looking for new head coaches come late December...should be an interesting remainder of the season.

The last 2 MAC coach to bolt after 2 years to take another job....Darrell Hazell and Dave Doren, combined 4-32 in conference play. You've been warned AD's...stay away from Dino.

The one thing I find somewhat amazing is the name no one mentions - Rod Carey. 2 MAC West Titles, 1 MAC Title, 26-9 overall, 16-2 MAC record.

Campbell - 0 West / MAC titles, 31-13, 20-6 MAC.
Fleck - Highest West finish - 3rd, 11-19, 8-9 MAC.

I really think guys like, Durkin, Kirby Smart, Brent Venables, and Scott Frost get looks before MAC guys. And of course if the Eagles flop would Chip Kelly be interested in a gig like Southern Cal.

That's the thing...how much better are these jobs besides a bigger paycheck? The top-tier of the MAC and the G5 in general has established itself as being able to take down the lower third of P5 schools, which end up being the programs looking for new coaches every 3-4 years.

There are countless horror stories for coaches who have left for greener pastures only to be out of a job three years later and who struggle to find another head coaching gig afterwards.

I agree. But even if these guys get canned after 3 years, they still are pocketing 10 million. It takes 20 years to make that in the MAC. I do wonder if a guy like Campbell who is a Ohio guy and has been in NW Ohio since 2003 (except for 2 years at Mount Union) might stick around. He is active in the community and really seems to enjoy living in the area.
