I loved how all the athletes took off right after the halftime thing. Well except for the girls bball team and a few other sporadics. It's just really sad to see so many empty seats at any games but what can we do anymore...

Dakich ripped on the BG News during the post game show. He pointed out that the men's team had a tiny article about Vandermeer that DD "didn't know what it was about" (or words to that effect) while the sports page had a big article about a kid that plays at Cincinatti. You could tell he was frustrated by the overall lack of promotion given to the game
I'd be frustrated too if I had a first place team that no one watched. The women's team is having a great year, the men's team is suprisingly good and the football team was the most explosive team I've ever seen here. Amazingly enough, the attendance at a single University of Michigan football game comes close to equalling the home attendance for all those teams COMBINED.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
What a shame!
I can remember when i went to BG, there was such a demand for student section seats that students were issued wrist bands. No wristband, no seat. And there were kids trying to sneak their way in. This was on weeknights too. Granted, this might have something to do with McLeod, Matela and Pardon, but this is BAD. Roll Along! You BG...ah, nevermind.
I thought the same thing as Coach Dakich as I read the BG News before the game. If I didn't know any better, I would have thought I was in Cincinnati. Realistically, though, I don't think attendance would have been dramatically different if the BG News had dedicated the entire paper to tonight's game. It just seems like no one cares, even after an exciting win like we had last month over UT or last weekend at Kent. It's really sad.
Ya know, I'm glad you mentioned this. Maybe all the men's bball stories will be moved to the back page with the classifieds now. Sorry that the feature story on the front page was about the WOMEN'S TEAM WHO WON AND REMAINED IN FIRST PLACE DAN!!! I might have to send him an email about the newspaper thing...that pisses me off! I saw this thing in the sports illustrated college edition the other day, it was a picture of Michigan State's student section all holding up the campus paper. On the front and back page in big green font, it said Beat Illinois. I thought what a great idea for everyone to have a sign and I was thinking about trying to do this for one of the upcoming games but if he is going to slam the paper, maybe we will stop any stories what-so-ever.Flipper wrote:Dakich ripped on the BG News during the post game show. Re: What a shame!
I was in school during those guys' senior year and the atmosphere was great at Anderson. This year should be no different. We have a first place team and a hometown kid that should be MAC POY. Part of the problem is that they aren't as flashy as those guys and part of the problem is that there were NO expectations for this team. Sadly, I would bet that a lot of students have not paid enough attention to know that this team is in first place (or even close to it).rbaltes wrote:I can remember when i went to BG, there was such a demand for student section seats that students were issued wrist bands. McMetz, I understand that you put a lot of effort in the paper, but I have to agree with Dakich on this one. The sports coverage, for some unfathomable reason, has gotten progressively worse over the two years that I have been here. You more than anyone know how pathetic our student support for games has been all year long, and I have to say that the BG News is, at least to some small degree, culpable in generating this type of atmosphere.McMetz811 wrote:Ya know, I'm glad you mentioned this. What I think the BG News has to realize is that they are a student newspaper, primarily distributed on-campus. The readership of the BG News have many other avenues for learning about the happenings in sports outside of BG, but the BG News is one of their only, if not the only source for news about BG Sports (if you're like me and don't consider the Blade to be a "news source"). I am really of the opinion that NOTHING but BG sports should be covered by the BG News because of this. All on-campus students get the Blade, USA Today and New York Times for free, and I would be willing to bet that most other students who actually read the newspaper have subscriptions or access to other newspapers. Why should there be that kind of redundancy?
If the sports culture is going to change at BGSU, it is going to have to change with the student newspaper. I know that is quite a bit of pressure to put on a student-run newspaper, but that is just reality. Dakich is completely justified in saying that he feels slighted by the BG News coverage of this team. It has been pretty disappointing. I have a lot of faith in the BG News staff, though. I know quite a few of you, and I am confident that this can and will change.

Wow... A Flipper post w/o one shred of sarcasm or humor... he must mean business!!Flipper wrote:McMetz....c'mon, let your readers' interests and your editors' sense of what's newsworthy determine what the paper covers, not personal grudges.
I'm with Flip-doggie on this one Metz... I understand you take a lot of pride in what you do and you do a great job... The women's team deserves the coverage they got!! But to use that as an excuse for not covering the men's team is bogus. Now, should the marketing department be doing something else to get butts in the seats? Yes... is the BGNews the sole source of attendance for men's hoops?? Of course not, but when the first place team in the MAC West has only 2000 for a game you've got to start asking questions.
Dakich is frustrated, the paper got the brunt of that frustration tonight. One thing I've learned with Dan though is don't take things he says personally. He doesn't mean them personally... he's a passionate guy about his team and he thinks they should have gotten more coverage in today's paper. I've got to say I agree with him...
When the team came out of the tunnel tonight, I felt SO bad for them... what a let down it must be to see a student section, that's supposed to be packed with you peers, only half full....

I do agree but we have a smaller sports staff than ever right now. Because we don't get funded by the university, a lot of reporters volunteer. The problem is, they quit because they need a job where they get paid more. Our editor is doing layouts 4 out of the 5 nights a week. I'm the other night currently. He also has 7+ stories to write a week because of the small staff on top of taking classes. The other few reported who cover basketball also have lives and are busy as heck. If anyone knows how to write and wants to come help, feel free. When articles get longer and stronger, then we will glady run them as more of a feature.

I used to make it a point to get a copy of the BG News, primarily for the "sports section", but once all of this coverage of OSU, Cincy and whoever else they can think of started, I have basically quit reading it, unless I have one practically placed in front of me with time on my hands. It is the BG News, NOT the Bearcat News, the Buckeye Blob, or any of the many other choices that you seem to like so much.
I couldn't agree with Coach Dakich more!!!

I hear ya man... I know it's rough. Andrew has been helping out by writing articles weekly... Heck, I'll do an editorial for you guys if you want. Hahah... seriously, if it'll help get the word out and get butts in the seats, I'll gladly write something. Maybe in exchange for that photo you were telling me about!!McMetz811 wrote:I do agree but we have a smaller sports staff than ever right now. It's a lot easier to pull a story off the wire than to find someone to write one... Maybe the basketball staff could help out... it would be great to have something written by someone on the coaching or administrative staff.... Hmmmmmm...
