Re: Exhibition
If a win ever felt like a loss - that was it. Man do we struggle to shoot. Everything we got was from the paint or the free throw line (where we missed a ton). I can't honestly recall more than 5 made shots from outside the paint. We kept fighting and grinding and found a way in OT to beat a team we should have beaten anyway, but we have a LONG way to go.

Re: Exhibition a genuine Fowl fest
Wow. Besides the 4-21 shooting in the first half, the good Falcons scored 17 points in the OT, the same as they scored in the opening 20 minutes to win.
What to say..... Zack sucks at driving the ball and if his shot is not falling, it's ugly, but he scored 12 points on 1-9 and 10-12 from the line and pulled down 16 rebounds. Hard to keep him on the bench since he was about tho only one rebounding.
Lillard looked good and it was nice to see Hluch play well. Worrell didn't do anything exciting and it's really tough to analyze much with 5 assists to 20 turnovers
Oh yeah, 65 FOULS were called with Notre Dame College winning 38-27. Parker let his temper get the best of him and bought himself some time on the bench, reacting to a foul and getting a "T" added to it.

Re: Exhibition
I didn't get to watch all the game and want to do a more thorough take but here goes.
1. Joseph was a mess. He was out of control most of the game. He scored 7pts and had 4 assists and 5 turnovers. I expect he is better than that but that wouldn't be tough. I could see him ending up as the back up by the end of the year.
2. Denny's shot was off but I don't expect that to be the case much of the year. He is a fantastic player. 12pts and 16rebounds. He is so aggressive that it helps everyone. He is locked in as a starter all year.
3. Alcegaire was unimpressive. All I saw was horrible shot selection. I was surprised after what was said about him earlier.
4. Parker was inconsistent as usual and I wonder if we will ever be able to really count on him. He could be the main guy on the team or just another guy. Bonehead plays all night and at times is a black hole on offense.
5. Worrell, I didn't notice at all.
6. Lillard was the best surprise. 20 pts 5 rebs 2 blocks. He was active all over. I didn't expect much as he was the last recruit and a guy available that late has questions. I know it's dumb to say this after one game but with his aggressiveness alone I expect him to at least be in the rotation the next 4 years. Likely much more.
7. Ali was the second surprise. He was a late add as well but steadied things when he played. He also put in 10 points. I don't know how much of a distributor he is although he did have a nice pass for a basket.
8. Wiggins looked like I thought he would and I think he will contribute eventually. He looked like he will be a solid but not spectacular big this year but could develop eventually.
9. Tisdale was just another guy as well. Alcegaire, Wiggins, Worrell and Tisdale all could be key contributors but didn't show much tonight.
10. Hluch was solid. Aggressive, active, athletic. I expect he will be a contributor for the next 4 years. He can be a very capable second guard in the rotation and at the least will become a very solid defensive guard.
11. Mayleben was what I thought he would be. He isn't a good enough athlete to be playing these many minutes. I hope he played the most he will play all year.
12. Fox I missed playing but it said he played 7 minutes?
I missed a huge chunk of time in the first half and look forward to watching it on replay tomorrow or Sunday.
I would bet that the rotation ends up
1. Ali-Joseph
2. Denny-Hluch
3. Lillard-Alcegaire
4. Parker
5. Worrell-Wiggins
Tisdale-Gomez-Mayleben I don't expect in the rotation much.
I included Joseph in the rotation only because of his play last year and Alcegaire because of what coaches mentioned.

Re: Exhibition
Tonight's 1st half, exhibition or not, was the most comically pathetic display of college basketball that I've seen by a D1 team. It don't believe that the turnover count was only 20. The only players that were even vaguely redeeming were Lillard and Hulu, and the latter played only sparingly.
1. Every time Denny and Alcequaire got the ball in the half court, they tried to force a play and failed badly. After listening the Hugor's post game, this seemingly pathological behavior makes a little more sense. Hugor emphasizes getting to the foul line, and driving hard to the basket against inferior athletes is how you do that. However, we can't have guys going 1-9 and 1-6,....they'll need to learn to know their spots. Both of them became predictable early on. Wes looks like a strong, fast, quick athlete who will be two notches better than Dickerson. However, he needs to learn to play better with the team and be smarter with his shot selection.
2. Hulu is an athletic super freak who looked very jittery and somewhat green. Hugor needs to grow that kid early bc he's a top flight athlete who can take over this league. I can understand why he was a major BCS-level WR recruit coming out of HS.
3. Lillard's 20 was legit. Kid has game. Good head on him. He'll be a fixture for the next 4 years.
4. ND collapsed aggressively when we fed the post. Worrell in particular needs to execute his post move with more immediacy when he gets the feed, and he needs to incorporate better footwork to create quick space inside.
5. When we feed the post, we need to get much better in providing perimeter outlets so our posts don't get tied up. With all of the collapsing, we perimeter guys need to be in better spots to get the pass-out. Also, our halfcourt sets need to be designed to allow for passing lanes to the weak side from the low post.
6. Worrell looked hyper-caffeinated, and was devastatingly ineffective in the low post. He obviously has the physical tools to be good this year. Hugor needs to get that kid some Xanex.
7. Spencer Parker showed up at half-time.
8. Denny has a special Bill Russell type of talent of seeing where the ball is going to after a shot is launched or a bad pass is made. Thas is how he is able to be involved in so many scrappy plays and get so many boards. This is a skill very few college players have developed. Denny had a ton of boards tonight, but it's fair to say that he played a very shitty game and should expect to get beat out by Lillard and or Hulu if he doesn't get his head out of his ass.
9. Denny's outside shooting was comically bad.
10. Parker's technical was inexcusably stupid for a senior. He sat for most of the second half.
11. Joseph really looked half-assed tonight.
12. Ali's game seems to be indistinquishable from Jehvon Austin's. Ali showed up in overtime as well.
13. Wiggins is long with a good frame for adding strength. He can get high off the floor. His reaction time sucks, and his footwork needs much improvement. He will be tough by the time he's a junior.

Re: Exhibition
How ugly was it?:
- Missed 35 shots (made 19)
- Missed 23 free throws
- Had 20 turnovers
- Had just 5 assists for the game
- Made just 4 shots (10 points) that weren't in the paint or from the free throw line
Let's hope we see nothing like that again all season.

Re: Exhibition
If BG can't find someone to rebound besides Denny, it's gonna be a LONG year. I don't really even know what I watched last night, but whatever it was, my eyes still hurt.
Re: Exhibition
That first half was hideous, no two ways about it.
Individually there were a lot of issues. We couldn't shoot for crap from outside of the 3' area, and that includes some AWFUL free throw shooting.
I was shocked to see Denny play so poorly and so out of control. Same goes for Joseph; I was never enamored with his shot last year, but thought he was calmer and less erratic last year.
Rebounding was flat out putrid outside of Denny. I didn't see any of our big guys show any ability to box out or any "want to" to grab boards. That is VERY concerning to me.
All that being said, I definitely saw some good things out there through the suck. Lillard looked like he could be a player. Ali was impressive to me and definitely outplayed Joseph. I thought Hulu looked good when he came in as well.
Most importantly, to me, is that we actually played a style of basketball that I enjoy watching and believe in. We attacked the rim the whole night. I know it was a pathetic lower division opponent, so I wouldn't expect us to get to the rim nearly as frequently in real games, but it's still a style of basketball I enjoy watching. We cut to the basket, we attacked off the dribble, and we pushed tempo in transition when we could.
The problem is, I don't know that we have nearly the talent to pull this style of play off. Our passing last night was, as is typical of a BG team the past 15 years, horrid. We couldn't feed the post, we couldn't hit cutters, and when guys got doubled down low we couldn't get the ball back outside. Denny cannot be playing with the ball in his hands; he's the only legit outside shooter we have and if this style is to work we need him on the perimeter creating space. Most annoying, however, is Lillard was the only one who showed any ability to actually finish a contested shot around the backup. Getting to the foul line is great, but for an attacking style to work you have to be able to finish around the rim...those calls aren't going to be made all the time, and when we play good teams they're going to be able to contest your shots without sending you to the line every single time. Especially considering we cannot shoot free throws either.
I expected this to be a rough year had Jans been back. I expected it to be an even rougher year having to bring in a new coaching staff and getting back to back shortened recruiting seasons isn't gonna help. Still, I like the style of play and think it will set us up for long term success when Huger can get players to run it.
And besides, this was still one of the must fun games I've ever been to. Took my kid out for his first game, and I'll be damned if he didn't sit there and watch the court the entire game. I have no idea what a 2 month old sees, and certainly doesn't comprehend what's going on, but he sure as hell seemed to enjoy watching!

For those who think we're going to win the MAC this year and break the drought, you're in for a long season or two. Huger has to get his players in that can play his style. Like hammb said, this is going to take some time but will pay in the long run.hammb wrote:I expected this to be a rough year had Jans been back. Yup. The conference keeps putting all of its resources into football and what was once a pretty damn good mid major conference is now a one bid league where a single NCAA tourney victory seems highly unlikely most years.zete wrote:BGFalconfromCincy wrote:BG not the only team having issues in exhibition play. That's the big reason I hope huger can really coach. With the frack generosity being allocated solely for hoops we could be in a position to dominate this league with a good budget and the best facility in the league.
Of course I fear they will likely just steal any funding hoops would have gotten so the frack gift just endows the hoops program and does little to improve it. But the bill frack challenge games are a great first step to proving me wrong.
