Me, too Grant. It just shouldn't be this way.

By the way, we missed one cause....two losing seasons into this season. Still, the small but quiet crowds are disconcerting.

The problem is, they quit because they need a job where they get paid more. Our editor is doing layouts 4 out of the 5 nights a week. I'm the other night currently. He also has 7+ stories to write a week because of the small staff on top of taking classes. The other few reported who cover basketball also have lives and are busy as heck. If anyone knows how to write and wants to come help, feel free. When articles get longer and stronger, then we will glady run them as more of a feature.
I hear ya man... I know it's rough. Andrew has been helping out by writing articles weekly... Heck, I'll do an editorial for you guys if you want. Hahah... seriously, if it'll help get the word out and get butts in the seats, I'll gladly write something. Maybe in exchange for that photo you were telling me about!!

It's a lot easier to pull a story off the wire than to find someone to write one... Maybe the basketball staff could help out... it would be great to have something written by someone on the coaching or administrative staff.... Hmmmmmm...
I agree. I realize its tough, McMetz, but there are a lot of creative things that the BG News could do if it so chose. As far as wire articles go, why not pick up articles on BG sports rather than things about OSU sprorts. God knows that school gets their athletic knobs slobbed enough by the media in this state.

That being said, I and many others DO very much appreciate the effort that all of you at the BG News put into what you do.

I couldn't agree with Coach Dakich more!!!
Um, you will never see anything about OSU in there from the nights I work now or worked last semester. Unless of course it was something making fun of them. As for cincy, I've never seen us run anything on them in the last year but I don't read the paper EVERY day. Another reason for more AP stuff in the paper is that the photos are getting smaller. We have 5 new photographers this year who are learning. Sports are tough to shoot, especially when you try to fill the frame with all the motion. Because of this, we get a lot of far away photos. When you crop them to the subject, they can only be run at a small size. This causes more room on the pages that need to be filled up and the only things we have to fill them with are AP stories.

We don't have AP writers covering BG Athletics until the MAC Tournament. Sorry, but BG is not that nationally respected at the momment.

Mike, you're probably not the one to ask... but what would it cost to run a half-page or full-page ad??

I'm specifically thinking Friday the 25th....

For those few of you who like it when I "stir the pot" this is for you . . . For those of you that don't like my viewpoints, the "Back" button is in the upper left hand corner and here's your chance now . . .

The only thing worse than watching John Floyd continually dribble into traps, double-teams and just piss-poor placing on the floor was listening to Dakich's five minute bitch on the BG News tonight in the post game.

Here's the paraphrase for those of you fortunate enough to miss this classless attempt at again placing blame on others that has worn itself out over the last seven years . . . (My comments in parentheses)

"I want to thank the 2200 who actually showed up tonight, b/c evidently they realized we had a game tonight. (Too bad someone failed to mention this to Steven Wright.) If you would've picked up the BG News tonight . . . You see a 1/4 of a page article that I can't even make out what it's about other than there's a picture of VanderMeer (this is true. The sports "editor" forgot to remove the editing instructions before publishing) And then there's a feature that covers a page about some wild man from Cincinnati. If you read this paper you would think we lived in Cincinnati reading a page about this wild man from Cincinnnati. (I'm sorry Dan, right next to the "wild man's article on page 9 is an advertisement covering TONIGHT'S GAME and SATURDAY'S GAME with a picture of JOHN FREAKING REIMOLD that takes up 3/4 of the bottom half.)

Has Dan ever watched this "wild man" from Cincinnati play? Or is he taking issue that the aforementioned "wild man's" name happens to be Jihad Muhammad? He is ever bit the scrapper that Mawel Soler is and quite frankly brings more to the table than Cory Eyink or John Floyd.

Dan also mentioned how "I swear to God I don't get tired, but this game made me tired" . . . Funny what a coincidence Dan, here's someone who's getting tired of insensitive, self-promoting comments too.

For a guy who got a win basically "Bobby Knight Home-Cooking style" wrapped with a bow, he sure has a lot to bitch about.

Wow do you not want to know this. Because we don't get funded by the university, the only way we make money is off of the ads...as in they are expensive! But, ask and you shall receive...

For grayscale:
1/2 page........................ $456.75
Full page........................ $913.50

If you throw color on there, add these numbers to those:
One color and black (per page) .........................$105.00
Two colors and black (per page) ........................$136.50
Three colors and black (per page) .....................$168.00
Process / 4 Color..............................................$320.00

Thank you for asking . . .

I think Dan has won a lot more games than many of us gave him credit for with this team coming into the season and overall, gifts or just hard work, this team has by most accounts exceeded expectations. We're not great, but we're not as bad as many, including myself originally thought. I'm still not ready to hand over a 1, 2 year or longer extension on a silver platter yet either, b/c this team still has a long way to go to close out games and play consistently. I heard others echo a similar sentiment and that is this, perhaps our team(s) have gotten as good as they will be under Dan Dakich. Off the court, he is a very personable guy and I have no issues with him other than the off-the-cuff emotional comments that detract from the qualities many of us admire. I just wonder if he can take us to the next level or not? That's all.

Gregg Brandon? Again, off the field I have no issues as I have rarely seen him in a social setting. I think he is an extremely gifted offensive mind, but again I question his ability to win the big game b/c I think he takes a rather relaxed view to everything.

There are too many rules and it's run by too many Canadians for me to get into hockey, but from what I've read Scott Paluch is doing a wonderful job with the hockey program.

Like Hammb, I personally find it terribly rough to watch women's "basketball" . . . I think they should give it another name, but Curt Miller is a solid coach as well.

I don't call for people to be fired or let go. That's not what this is about. This is about looking at things objectively and with rationale and getting this University to the next level in athletics.

Interesting...I don't think Brandon takes a relaxed view of anything...I've seen him go off on people on the sidelines during games and the practice field too many times. I think this "win the big game" issue is a bit overblown. We lost to Miami when they had Ben, we lost to UT at the Glass Bowl (the only team to win there in the last 4 years was Miami) and we lost to NIU in the third week of last season just days after a freshman player died at practice. It's not like we've lost games that we were supposed to win, but we have lost games that we needed to win. In the end, we probably agree that the program needs to knock off a good MAC team on the road before we can lay claim to elite status. I think Brandon is the guy that can get us there.

So far as hoops goes...I think Dan hurt himself a lot by bringing in guys like Lewis, Moss, Harwell and the rest (even Netter) who had loads of physical talent but did not share his vision of the game. This year's team may have less talent than last year's team, but they are far tougher mentally. As a result, they're winnning.

Does Dan say some things he shouldn't? Yeah, probably but other than the rant against the refs last year, I don't know that it's hurt him....yet. Dan has a year left on his deal (I think) after this season. It will be interesting to see how Krebs or his successor plays this. I think we're back on track after two awful years, but is that enough to warrant an extension? Is the program maxed out under Dan at 20 or so wins and a trip home from Cleveland? Can Dan handle playing third fiddle behind football (gets more resources) and hockey (draws better local support and is drawing some pretty decent crowds)?

The offseason will be interesting....

As of late the BG News has had more and more national stories and less local news. Sounds like Dr. Ekstrand needs to push the paper a little more in her Intro to Journalism class.

This is exactly why I stopped reading the sports section. It was like I was reading another school's newspaper.

The same thing with the radio station. I was listening to the hockey game and during intermission they send it back to the studio. You would think they would give BG scores first since that's our radio station. They give the top 25 scores then I heard the buckeye score along with their record and how "it's a shame that the buckeyes won't be going to post season play" Then I have to wait for some other scores until they finally give some MAC scores with of course BG being last. The guy didn't give the overall record of BG like he did with the buckeyes and he failed to mention the good year we're having on the court. But its a shame about those bucks.

I'm all for covering the women's team, but it would also be nice if there was something on the front page that said:

BG VS BALL STATE TONIGHT, HUGE GAME, BE THEIR TO SUPPORT YOUR FIRST PLACE FALCONS!

The same should be done on the day of the women's games and hockey games. Put a bug in students ears on the front page that they are missing something pretty amazing at AA or at the Ice Arena.
