Also Babers was in the running with Illinois but turned it down due to a lack of stability with the AD.

Re: Coaching Carousel
Matt Campbell is going to Iowa State? That is a bad job. He's in for a serous challenge.
I'm not surprised Babers turned down Illinois, though this is the only place I've heard that. That place is a mess. They hired their interim, who WMU fired. Honestly I think Cubit will do fine at Illinois, but it should tell you something that Illinois preferred their interim over an up-and-comer. Either the up-and-comers are not interested in Illinois, or there are too many openings to expect a decent candidate.
So Babers turned a job down in a state where he already has HC success in a conference which pays well at a school which truthfully could and probably should be a Big Ten contender with all the local talent. He is being selective, and maybe he is in no rush to leave. He's a veteran coach and has seen good coaches bomb out at bad programs. He's smart enough to not make that mistake.

Re: Coaching Carousel
I honestly believe he doesn't want to go somewhere that needs a complete rebuild, which is what he'll mostly be getting with a lot of these jobs. He inherited good teams at EIU and BG and hasn't proven that he can or wants to build up a team from scratch. I suppose we'll see but the high profile jobs are quickly disappearing.MarkL wrote:Matt Campbell is going to Iowa State? That is a bad job. He's in for a serous challenge.

Does Toledo pay more than BG?
Re: Coaching Carousel
I agree with Flipper....if I'm Babers I am all over that UCF job....if Herman leaves Houston that would be another one to go after.
Both those jobs you can have success at and are good recruiting areas. Illinois and Iowa State are just the same thing over and over. Fire coach X, bring in Coach Y for 4 years. Get excited over Coach Y's recruiting class after year 1, preach patience after year two, go 5-7 year 3, go 3-9 year four. Fire Coach Y, hire Coach Z and repeat the process.

Re: Coaching Carousel
Campbell made more, yes. However, Babers deal was very incentive laden with bonuses for wins, division titles, conference titles and bowl wins.Globetrotter wrote:Does Toledo pay more than BG?

Re: Coaching Carousel
Missou now offering Campbell. Regardless of where he goes he is gone.
Re: Coaching Carousel
Ryan Autullo reporting Toledo ready to make him highest paid MAC coach. Fleck makes $800,000.
Should Babers stick around, I wonder what kind of pay raise he can negotiate.
Iowa State is not a bad gig. Rhoades spent 6 mediocre years in Ames. Relatively low expectations, high pay. Succeed and you are on the list for jobs like Texas, Georgia, Ohio State, etc. Fail and you made millions and can go work on someone's staff.

Re: Coaching Carousel
I think we've got a shot to keep Babers another year. None of the offers he'll get this year will be "destination" jobs; they'll all be rebuilds. He's an older coach and he's already done his fair share of jumping around, so staying at BG another year might have it's appeal. He's got a decent roster returning at BG, an improving defense, and an offense that has passed his magic "season 2, weeks 4-6" mark and knows the system well. This time next year he might be looking to turn 3 straight division titles and back to back championships into a big boy job.
Just my two cents, but I don't think he'll be getting any "must take" offers this year. He may have his eyes set higher.

Re: Coaching Carousel
If true that he can go to Iowa State, Missouri, or stick around and be the conference's highest paid coach, he would be a fool to not leave immediately for Mizzou. That is a good program in a great conference and is in a good position. They won the division two straight years, they have a lot of talent, they have access to great recruiting grounds, and they have a fanbase that is ecstatic to win championships but happy just to win.Globetrotter wrote:Missou now offering Campbell. Also I would hate to see the MAC join the ranks of other conferences paying 500K, 600K, 700K and more for coaches just to "keep up with the neighbors." I believe the game has gotten far too big and the MAC has done a good job of keeping it small, but with Fleck getting paid big bucks I fear the next generation of coaches will demand the same. I'm sure those days are coming regardless but I'd sure like to hold off for a while.

If they are doing it we need to do it to just to compete.MarkL wrote:If true that he can go to Iowa State, Missouri, or stick around and be the conference's highest paid coach, he would be a fool to not leave immediately for Mizzou. $700-800k is keeping up with the neighbors. The MAC is a trailer park so far as the salary scales go
