Coaching Carousel
Re: Coaching Carousel
Interesting to see what Toledo will do. And more importantly...what their recruits think.

Good living in the MAC Trailer Park. Don't blame any coach for moving to a better neighborhood if offered but there is no reason to complain about their pay in the MAC.Flipper wrote:$700-800k is keeping up with the neighbors. The MAC is a trailer park so far as the salary scales go

Re: Coaching Carousel
I don't think any of them are complaining. The current reality is this.... if you want to compete for coaching talent with CUSA or the Mountain West, you need to figure on paying right around $800k. If you want to be on the same level as the Sun Belt, you can pay $400k per year.
I hope Dino Babes gets the best job he can... it will speak well for us to have another HC move up. I figured when he was hired that the best case scenario would be two years of Dino, a MAC title or two and we deal from strength on the next hire. Mizzou , Memphis, UCF could do a heck of a lot worse then hiring Dino.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Coaching Carousel
Id like to see the MAC start to cap some of these salaries. You can give me all the BS numbers about exposure and free advertising, but the bottom line is FBS football is going to bankrupt this conference. Especially if Big 5 schools start to schedule each other more consistently. When these coaches start getting 20,000 fans to games on a consistent basis, then we can start paying them 700-800k per year.
In all honesty I can't believe these State Universities are allowed to fudge attendance numbers they way they do. I would think it's against the law. I have a friend who has a kid playing at EMU. He said they may have had 300 people in the stands against UMASS. Akron had to cut their baseball program because they invested too much money in a stadium that no one goes to. It just doesn't make sense. The MAC can be competitive at this level, but it needs to be smart enough to know its limitations.

Are universities fudging attendance numbers? Or are they just not counting attendance in a manner that you would like?apollo wrote:In all honesty I can't believe these State Universities are allowed to fudge attendance numbers they way they do.
Sometimes, universities are counting tickets sold, regardless if the purchaser shows up. Other times they count the people who actually showed up. Either way can be valid, according to the NCAA.

I can assure you these MAC schools are not selling 5-10 thousand tickets for games where people just don't show up. It's schools buying their own tickets.Schadenfreude wrote:Are universities fudging attendance numbers? When Greg Christopher was here he was taking money out of the other sports Falcon Club accounts and using the money to buy tickets that were just being given away.
A lot of the corporate sponsors are the same thing....they aren't actually donating money to the university. They are buying 500-1000 tickets per game at a extremely reduced rate so schools can say they met the 15,000 minimum.
Look at the UT/WMU game on Friday. Biggest game of the year for a borderline top 25 school and no one was there.

Re: Coaching Carousel
Unbelievable how many coaching changes there could be this year. So far there are 19 programs changing coaches, or 14.8% of FBS. If some dominoes fall like last year (Nebraska hired OrSt's coach who hired Wisconsin's coach who hired Pitt's coach), we may see 20% or maybe even more of all programs have a new head coach next year.

Kirby Smart is the top candidate at Georgia. A lot of these jobs seem to be leaning towards top level assistants over current coaches.

Barry Odom in line for the Memphis job. Babers a finalist for the UCF job along with Randy Shannon, Gene Chizek and Geoff Collins.

Re: Coaching Carousel
I know I would like to see Dino stay for one more year so that the recruits and redshirts have a better idea of what is going on. There seems to be a lot of talent in the positions we are short and lacking in; not to mention what we will be losing from graduation. I realize we more than likely cant keep him but hope his leaving, if he does, doesn't deplete our future of the program. Doom and gloom I know. Brandon, in the past, pretty much stayed with Urbans style after 2 yrs, but this is a complete system overhall and Dino recruited under this. If and when the next coach comes, this may not be his cup of tea. Talent, yes we have all kinds of talent and Dino was rewarded with Clawsons recruits that fit well with Dinos style. However....

This is what really bothers me, and I probably am not the only one: BLADE - Campbell reportedly on his way to Iowa State; UT counters offer - Campbell quotes in regard to this " Really easy: I haven't talked to anybody," Campbell said Friday. "I have zero interest in terms of anything other than this football team and being its head football coach.
That's always been my stand on that. This is really important to me, and doing it the right way and getting it to where it needs to be is important to me."
Way to stick to the script, Matt.
bottom line/between the lines, we will not have 'Soupy' to kick around next year.

I noticed that too...pretty much what Urbie said and 48 hours later he was in Salt Lake City being introduced as the next HC at Utah.zete wrote:This is what really bothers me, and I probably am not the only one: BLADE - Campbell reportedly on his way to Iowa State; UT counters offer - Campbell quotes in regard to this " Really easy: I haven't talked to anybody," Campbell said Friday. Most of these guys will lie right up to the time the ink is dry on the new contract. The Nature of the beast.
