Dino switching orange colors?
Re: Dino switching orange colors?
Next to 0 chance anyone on the current staff is hired. The longest anyone has been at BG is Nick Monroe (Secondary), he is in his 5th year. I really hope McCloud does not coach the bowl.
I think it is a perfect fit of playing in a dome and then mostly in pretty good weather. There has been a pretty noticeable drop off in QB play when the calendar hits November the past 2 years. Johnson threw for 286 YPG in November compared to 415 in September / October. Knapke in 2014 threw for 280 YPG in September / October, 169 YPG in November. Some of that is weather, although this year, it was pretty perfect weather wise. It's been discussed, here that 2 of the better MAC D's (Western Michigan and Toledo) had gameplans that had Johnson holding the noticeably longer.
I'll echo was jp said regarding skill players, especially in the ACC. BG's skill guys this year were head and shoulders better than just about every defense they saw. I have no idea what kind of talent Syracuse currently has, but, Dino will get players in a hurry.
People point to the fact he has always walked into good gigs. EIU was 2-9, 2-9 the 2 years before he got there and he won 2 titles. It is true he walked into a stacked BG team in 2014 and last season was a minor disappointment with how everything went down. Almost all of the offensive talent was recruited by his predecessor. But, he has completely remade the BG defense into one of the better in the conference. The job done on that side of the ball in 2015 considering the talent they lost has been really impressive.
Ultimately I think he is going to get players to go play there and will be a successful coach. But, don't be surprised with some massive growing pains. Especially on defense.

The "system" only works with the right talent. Syracuse needs to ready themselves for a steady stream of 3-and-outs and mind-boggling time of possession differentials which might demoralize their fan base and wear out the honeymoon period quickly. He's also a mover who could bolt for Baylor or whenever the next opportunity comes along, and an ACC school might not want to think of itself as a stepping stone. That being said, playing home games indoors will help the development of the offense immensely. After the UCF debacle I half expect to see breathless breaking news reports of Babers being hired as Scott Frost's offensive coordinator.
Given the fact that we have the players and are accustomed to the system already I think an internal hire is the way to go. Changing everything again in less than 2 years would be detrimental when the program is still in position to have success. How about this:
Sean Lewis as head coach with Nick Monroe as his DC.
Brian Ward as head coach with Andy Sowder (or another offensive coach) staying on as OC/Assistant Head Coach.
Campbell got hired at 31 and Fleck at 32. Is 29 really that different than 31/32 at this point? Both were elite, productive recruiters and Lewis (and his #BetheAlpha mantra) seems to be in a similar vein.
Kingston has not been inclined historically to promote from within but these circumstances are unique.

Weak at WR will be a problem initially. BG might not be in the power 5 but their WR unit is better than the vast majority of power 5 teams. If you don't believe this go watch what our receivers did to Tennessee in the opener. Alabama and Oklahoma didn't find nearly as much success against that secondary.crusty wrote:Hey jb,
I understand that Dino has been insistent on focusing on the MAC Championship game. He really want to give BG a going away gift. His agent apparently has been handling negotiations.
Dino says it will take until midpoint of the second season for the system to roll in. We are all prepared for that. We have a very good freshman QB who is a dual threat, but is also a very good passer, especially accurate long. We also have a Junior that has a cannon for an arm but can't run. I suspect one of those two will be serviceable.
We also have some good young backs and a great punt returner. We are weak at WR, which will be a problem.
Good luck Friday.

Sean Lewis? Don't know Lewis at all, but I have a difficult time thinking that would be a good idea. I think we're best served by having a HC with some experience as a HC. I know it doesn't have to work that way...Urban Meyer wasn't even a coordinator before he came here...but I think it's a safer route.

Wolken reporting that Syracuse and Babers have a deal in place and an announcement will officially be made this weekend. Hopefully he can ride off into the sunset with a conference championship.

They just reported on gameday that Babers will sign with Cuse later on today.

Good for him, he achieved what he wanted to here and it's time to move on. I'd love to see Nick Monroe get the interim tag and coach the bowl game.

Assuming this is all true, congratulations Coach B! He has more than earned this opportunity. Syracuse is a historic program that is waiting for the right head coach to bring excitement to the program. I'll miss the energy of Coach Babers but he left the program better and more nationally relevant than he found it.

Barbers meeting with team today - deal done. Chatter that they " might" elevate Lewis. We'll see
Re: Dino switching orange colors?
Lewis or Ward. I could see either of those being a head coach. Ward's work with the defense this year was nothing short of astonishing.

Would love to see both stay with Lynch and Snowden

If keeping Lewis or Lynch means running this offense still, I'm all for it.

That's exactly how I feel. I'm usually against promoting an assistant from within right after a change. I much prefer going out and looking for the next motivated up and comer. Look at situation from Meyer to Brandon. Brandon is an excellent coach. HC just isn't his thing. It's a whole different world. In this case, I think it's at least worth taking a strong look at who we have. I love the system. If we have someone in house who is hc material, it might be worth taking the chance. Still, I hope they open it up and look at what's available out there.
